Default Basil's Clicker Training Journal

Okay now I'm sure someone is scratching their head saying "day 1/2???" I don't get my clickers until tomorrow so I downloaded iClicker for the iPad and started tonight. He seems to understand already that click means millet. I'll work with him a bit more tomorrow.

One thing that I'm a bit concerned about...he won't go near my hand yet when it is outside the cage. He continues going on with grooming himself after talking a bit of a look at the hand. If I put my hand just inside the open door he'll again regard it, this time for a bit longer, and go back to preening. But if I get near him without millet he'll back away. He will look at me when I am talking to him, and he moves his back as if he is responding, without sounds at this point. Am I going to fast? I don't want to go backwards here, and I'm new to the bonding/taming thing, so I will probably ask many questions.

Thanks all,

Dave

I find slower is almost always better, and it certainly is if there's any doubt. They become much more comfortable when we don't ask too much of them. If he backs away from your hand, then he's not ready for you to do that yet.

Not sure if this belongs in the training journal or not, but it's an update so I figured it would be okay here. This morning when I was cleaning his cage and replacing food and water I showed Basil some of the toys in his cage, and about a hour later he was exploring one of them. He also let me put my hand outside the cage near him and did not back away. A couple of times over the course of several minutes he seemed to want to move toward my hand, but didn't quite feel like it yet. It's progress, and I'm encouraged.

That's great, Dave! I'm glad that Basil has started to explore his toys and check things out
