I seem to remember some stories years ago of birds dying from impacted bowels because their owners didn't say the "poop word." They were potty trained so well that they wouldn't even poop in their cages without their owners telling them to. Does anyone know if this was just a myth, or did this really happen? Google found this, but not much else:

I read a post once from a vet nurse who said she had seen cases where birds got impacted bowel and died because their new owners didn't know the "word". Isn't that awful? She was very much opposed to toilet training. There is something about teaching them cues to go on things like newspaper or their cage rather than with a word. Seems to make sense.

The breader that my mom is getting her budgie from (any week now!!!) has a bird that potty trained himself! He flies back to his cage when he has to "go."

I have noticed that Tallulah is somewhat selective in where he poops. When I lie on my back sometimes he'll fly to me and sit on the bridge of my nose and kiss my face, sometimes for a good half hour. I'm super weird for letting him do this, I know! It may be a coincidence but he has NEVER pooped on my face. I'm always scared when I open my eye to see his butthole hovering above my eyeball... but nothing's ever come out lol THANKFULLY! Again, this may just be a coincidence but I like to think that he loves me so much he doesn't want to poop on me

I'm scared to actually train him though... I'm curious to see if anyone else has heard about the quote above!

Haha very true! That's the first thing guests ask me though when they come over and see him flying around... "does he poop everywhere!?" I just say "Do you see poop everywhere?" (I do clean my house thank you very much, and budgie poop is itty bitty and easy to clean up!)

It's little until it's on your eyeball because you looked up to see bird butt popping a squat! lol That's my fear anyway
