Question Lettuce and cabbage?

Hi, I'm new here (well, kinda, I made ONE post awhile ago and then forgot about my account ) but I have an issue with my budgie, Marbles.

He just won't eat his veggies! He loves fruit (apples, orange slices, pears, grapes etc) but I've heard that isn't all that healthy (too much sugar?) so I asked my friend (who has a cockatiel) what to feed him. He suggested lettuce and cabbage leaves with water on them, so he will take a bath, but I thought I read somewhere lettuce/cabbage is bad for budgies? Is this true?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Lettuce is not bad for budgies, but it has very litttle nutritional value for them. I give my budgies wet lettuce leaves and they love rolling in it.
I'm pretty sure cabbage isn't good for budgies.
Oh, and welcome to TB

Welcome to the forum! Cabbage is definitely not good, and like Beth said, lettuce isn't bad but it's not very good either. My budgies like broccoli a lot! I guess you just have to find out what they like. Try mixing in a little vegetable in their seed, so they get a taste of it. They might just be scared to try . Good luck!

My flock of 10 budgies are veggies eaters. Plenty to choose from :

1. Carrots - grate it for a small portion everyday to serve to them.
2. Broccoli - cut off 2 big florets with its stems and poke thro wood skewer.
3. Corn - divide into 3 portions for 3 days servings & poke thro wood skewer.
4. Greens - English parsley, romaine lettuce, choysum, kale and wet them.
5. Whole grains - oat groats and whole wheat grains, soaked for an hour or 2.

Remember these food are perishable. So please monitor these food turning bad after a few hours.

Iceberg lettuce has no nutritional value its mainly water but there are many types of lettuce mine LOVE read leaf lettuce

also cabbage is fine for birds as long as its not skunk cabbage which won't be found in a store any way -the only thing I haven't found out yet (still looking) is if it should be cooked or if its okay to have it not cooked, I know some foods have to be cooked for the birds to eat it

here's a great article that shows what is the Best, Good, and what is safe for them but doesn't really have nutritional value

http://www.quakerparrots.com/diet/fo...e-for-parrots/

Yes it came from a Quaker forum BUT if its okay for one type of bird its good for all birds
