I just noticed that the Moss' butt has droppings stuck on it. I looked over at their cage and she had a long stringy poop dangling from her vent and then I went over to look at her (by then the stringy dropping had fell) and she had some normal looking poop stuck to her.. I'm not sure if she's sick, eggbound, or if she was just trying to lay an egg on the bottom of the cage (that has a grate) and that's how she got poop stuck on her butt. Should I quarantine her in case she's sick? What do I do if she's eggbound? She hasn't laid an egg in a few days now. she's a chronic egg layer. she lays on and off. I've tried to make her stop laying but it doesn't work for very long
Could I put a bowl of warm water in her cage instead and see if she bathes in it? Because she's not very tame and it would stress her to catch her and hold her. And I'm afraid I might even accidently break the egg inside her (if there really is an egg) while trying to hold her (since she would struggle like crazy).
She seems to be acting pretty normal, even hung on top of the cage by her feet and beak a minute ago (doing what I call "the monkey bars") so I hope its not too bad. She's never had a messy vent area before though
I'm sorry no you have to catch her to do it once in your hand she will be fine but don't squeeze her because of the egg then once done use the olive oil like I said, you need a small bowel and a childs small paint brush so you can lightly brush it on.
Let me know how you've got on, I know it's very distressing to see a bird egg bound I've been there and it's not for the bird.
No, she hasn't been stressed, except she possibly could've been yesterday because 4 of my button's escaped from their cage and were loose in my room for probably awhile before I found out. But I noticed the poop stuck on her only about 8-9 hours after that. I've had the light on more in the last few days, so I think that set her to laying again, which led her to possibly get eggbound. Or since I left her water bowl out for several days now (been having them use "waterers" since they don't poop in those. I'm afraid of them getting yeast infection or something from drinking poopy water) maybe she hasn't been able to bathe properly.
No, she isn't puffed. Her tail is bobbing though, but that happens about every time before she lays an egg. I dont know whether her poops are larger than usual since I have 4 other budgies in with her. She usually has really big wet smelly poops when she lays, so they probably are.
We don't have any olive oil so I tried using a cloth with warm water but when I tried to catch she and the other budgies freaked out. Lyrek banged herelf against the bars of the cage and I ended up just stressing Moss out even more. so I'm going to try and see if she cleans herself up on her own, if not I'll let her out for playtime and catch her then so it'll be less stressful to catch her. Would spraying her vent area with warm water in a spray bottle work for getting the poop off?
8 of my budgies are in a single HQ cage (I know its only supposed to fit 6, but I'm going to get the double HQ soon), Moss and 4 of my others are in a slightly smaller cage than the single HQ, and then Terry & Perry are in a cage exactly like Moss'.
