I dont know that is weird! Maybe he is comfy. My birds sleep on top of the wire of their swings.
i have a question. I have had my budgies since september and did not know of this website so i guess i did some things that are trust killers. Since i didnt know on the second day i took them out with a cloth and let them climb on me. Right now they will hop on my finger in the cage but hop off if i move my hand. They run away from my hand in the cage and i used to grab them to take them out but now i get them on my finger and move my hand out super fast so they stay on. They hate leaving their cage and the only time that they fly is if they are trying to get back to the cage or if something spooked them. I now know i was terrible with them but i really want them to still trust me! Did i ruin this chance of trust? Please help!
one of my budgies likes to perch on a slope on the top of her cage when she is napping, with her head lower than the rest of her body. at first i thought it was weird, but she seems happy and she sleeps on perches most of the time.
every now and then i catch mine hanging sort of upside down from the top of the cage sleeping, almost like a bat
then i've got a cockatiel, that while I had Pearl,Lily,Hop a long and Sun Dance caged up in a cage w/ a nest box she would sleep between the cages, actually she was there most of the day, with one foot attached to the tiels cage one attached to the budgie cage , Looked like she was doing a split,, We fiqured that either hop a long or sun dance was actually that tiels mate and she didn't like not bieng able to get to him
Its not weird at all my birds usually sleep on there swings or on the bars of the cage and every one in a while I will find one or two sleeping as you described. I thought it was strange at first and watched them like a hawk thinking they were sick or something but then I realized it was just another funny pose. My jessie will sometimes sleep upsidedown hanging from the top of the cage. I think that is really funny. I call it her bat behavior. Anyways they are always doing something funny to see. So don't worry its ok, and normal for them to come up with differnt poses. Do you always sleep in the same position? It the same with them every once in a while they come up with a new sleeping stance.
As far as grabbing them out of the cgae instead of teaching them to step up....I always just grabbed them (I did my bird and my friends birds like this), then when out I let them sit on my finger and I talk to them and keep them pretty close to my face so they pay attention to me. Then I slowly would start petting their heads or backs. Soon they weren't spooked of everything and would stay on me even if one of my boys ran into the room. They now will step up and I don't have to grab them and the boys can even get them out using step up.
So I did things wrong/different and the birds turned out fine. I don't think you have messed anything up.
Grabbing them only scares them more, if you notice if you put your hand or a object over a birds head it freaks out - to them it's a preditor and they're going to do everything they can to get away from it
I've always just let my birds come out on thier own, when they were ready too. and ive never had a problem
