Default Hand Sanitizer?

Hi all,

I have a question. When I am either cleaning the bird cage, or performing other tasks that get my hands somewhat dirty, I tend to use some hand sanitizer afterward to kill germs. Not a huge amount, just enough to use on my hands. I wonder though , is the smell of it harmful to the birds? I don't use it near them, or have it on my hands when I clean their accessories. I'm more or less just being somewhat paranoid about the slight residual smell of it that lingers in the air for a while.

My inclination with hand sanitizer is to not expose budgies to it. Some have scents added, and I can't imagine that exposure to the alcohol could be good for them. I don't trust any kind of product that leaves any sort of residue on my hands as being safe. With hand sanitizer, I'd be inclined to not expose my budgies to it, even after it dries. This is only my 'gut' feel; I just think its better to be overly cautious whenever I'm uncertain. I'd love to get an avian vet's perspective on this...

Yea I agreed with Kim. I was quite obsessive with washing hand whenever I handle my boys or their items. Somehow recently I felt it cld be worse than bacteria exposure.

I guess there shd be a certain amount of hand soap residue left despite my effort in rinsing. I m using dettol handsoap n my hand is very dry.

Any experience to share?

That's really a very good question to ask. It might help to rinse your hands in plain water after using it.

I wouldn't use it. As the others said, the scent is very strong, even to us! Just don't let them anywhere near and they will be fine! I first use hand sanitizer and then wash my hands before doing anything with the flock!
