Arrow Telling the Gender of Young Budgies

Hi everyone,
We get a lot of questions about young budgies' genders here so I decided to make this rough guide for easy reference

Telling the gender of baby budgies is possible as early as 4 or 5 weeks. I have provided pictures of my own budgies as fledglings to show the differentiation between the two sexes.

Male baby budgies have translucent purpley pink ceres whereas females tend to have bluish/purplish ceres with a hint of white around the nostrils.

This is Smore at 4 and half weeks. He is a male of the normal variety. As he gets older, he will get a deep blue cere.

This is Mocha at 4 and half weeks as well. She is a female. Note that all females obtain a tan/brown cere regardless of the variety.

This is a picture of the two together to show the distinction. Notice how white colouring around Mocha's cere does not appear around Smore's. In addition, her cere is quite pale in comparison to Smore's.

NOTE: Another rule to sexing male budgies that may come in handy is that certain varieties keep their baby coloured ceres. These mutations are inos (albino, lutino, creamino), recessive pieds, dark eyed clears, fallow and lacewings. Females will always eventually get a brown cere.

This is BonBon at 5 weeks old. He is a recessive pied, therefore he will maintain that deep purple cere even as an adult.

bibliomelo likes this.

Excellent post, Zeena! Thank you. BTW, your budgies are so sweet.

This I know for sure... Kiwi is a male and Snowy is a male. The others? I have to look again very closely tonight. Butter may be a female, Chicken may be a female, and Lilac may be a male.

Zeena... Have a look at my Mobile Me Gallery and tell me what you think about Butter, Chicken, and Lilac. Thanks. Note: I was going to call Butter, Frosty, but I decided to go with Butter instead because of the creamy looking feathers. So, you will see some pics there labeled as "Frosty."

I have looked a lot at pics of Butter and Chicken. They both appear to be female. Lilac is the only one that I am confused about. I think Lilac is still too young to tell. I will try to take better pics this weekend with my Pentax camera instead of my iPhone and see if that will help. If Lilac is in fact a male I am going to have to change the name.

This post was very helpful!

I've been wondering about Nums sex lately. Originally I thought it was a boy, but now I think I might have a girl. If someone could take a look that would be helpful:

Thanks!!
