Default Gluten free seed mix?

It has been 10 years since I have had a budgie. My sweet old boy died at 11 years old and I'm finally at a point in my life where I'm in a good spot to get another. But the problem is that I have celiac disease now and all the different budgie food I'm finding all has wheat and barley. Is there a way to make my own seed mix that doesn't contain any wheat or barley or is there no hope for me owning a budgie again? What can I do?

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

You'll find a great resource for budgies here. Here is a list of "Stickies" posts with some essential information. Scroll down to see a section on budgie Diet and Nutrition too. List of Stickies We also have additional information in our Articles section of the forum.

Follow the guidelines in the diet threads here, and you will find ideas for a healthy and balanced diet for budgies. There is no need to go gluten free for birds. Their digestive systems are much different from ours.

Hi there
Yes you can mix your own bird seed, click on the sticky below for the ratios and omit the oats:
Quality Seed Mix

You might struggle with pellets as the manufacturers appear to be quite vague with their ingredients list, so I'd make sure you offer a good variety of vegetables/ sprouted seed etc.

Julie, I think the poster is concerned about him/herself being adversely affected by the gluten in the seed mix. Some coeliacs are very sensitive to what they touch as well as eat & as we all know, bird seed gets flung everywhere!

Thanks you guys! I'm so relieved there are options. Yeah I'm really sensitive and have to be careful because things like that will make me sick. Thanks again. I really want to finally get another budgie and I was so scared that I wouldnt be able to. I want them to have the best but also want to be able to be healthy myself at the same time!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

A great deal has probably changed with regard to "best practices" in budgie care over the last 10 years, so please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

I'm glad you'll be able to offer your prospective budgie friend a healthy diet without worrying about compromising your own health in the process!

We'll look forward to meeting him or her once you have your new budgie home and all settled in.
