My Rio had to be put to sleep two days ago.

I feel so many mixed emotions right now as I don't know if I did the right thing in hindsight. He had breathing problems and I think I missed them due to the EXTREME heat we have in summer. I just thought he was feeling the heat with his wings out and mouth breathing. Then the other day I noticed for the first time his wings actually trembling. I knew something was very wrong.

I took him to the Emergency Vet that I knew was open that night He stayed on oxygen overnight there until a 'supposed' avian vet saw him. The vets on the night I took him said they thought he had an obstruction in his throat and needed surgery. When I rang them from work the next day the 'avian' vet said that was not the case and she didn't know what was wrong. She said she had done a crop wash and a faeces test which were clear but she thought he had fatty liver. When I went to see him that afternoon his eye was all weird and she said she thought he had fatty liver which was now causing neurological problems. She suggested putting him down as he was suffering.

I was heartbroken seeing him struggling breathing and with his bad eye and agreed to this.

So short story is I brought my little man home in a half pillow case and buried him.

Moe, my blue and white boy, is missing his buddy terribly.

So sorry to hear about Rio.

You did the right thing, you sought out medical expertise when you realised there could be a problem and you selflessly followed that expert advice.
Having read your other post I'd just like to add that medicine is not always as black or white as we'd like it to be. When time is of the essence due to suffering or deterioration then medics (& owners) may have to jump off the fence and make decisions based on educated guesses. Rio is at peace and pain free and knows that you tried your very best.

Big hugs to you and Moe (& Homer)

I'm so sorry to hear this... You have my deepest sympathies over your Rio's passing.
Time will ease the grief and hopefully soon as your heart begins to heal, the memories of the good times you had with Rio will give you comfort.
Surely with your extra TLC and with Buzz and Homer's help, Moe will start to feel better and adjust to this new reality.

Rest in peace, Rio.

Madonna. I am so very sorry for the loss of Rio. Madonna you are a good caring person who has a heart of gold. Rio knew you loved him so much and you gave him the best of everything. Remember all of Rio's loving memories and hold them close to your heart. I'm sure Buzz and Homer will keep Moe company. We are sending you a hug big hug from me and Indi.

Fly high Rio and sing a beautiful song.

Thank you so much everyone. I know you all totally understand how I feel.

Also you have helped to relieve my birdie mum's guilt somewhat as it is very true I just no longer wanted to see him suffering.

Thank you.

I'm so, so sorry for your loss of your precious boy. It's never easy to lose a treasured member of our flock, especially when it seems they are fine one minute and gone the next.

Rio was so loved and cared for, he knew he had the best mum in the entire world. Now, he is free of his pain and suffering because you gave him the gift of the Rainbow Bridge when he was suffering

It's easy to think "But what if I had done ____? Would Rio still be alive?". Just remember that you knew in that moment, when you looked at him, that he was in pain, and that he was suffering, and would not get better. You showed how much you loved him in that moment when you told him you loved him and wanted him to be happy--forever.

Now, your beautiful boy is surely looking down on you and his flock from his place among the angels.

My best and warmest wishes to you, Moe, and the rest of the flock during this difficult time.

Madonna,

You gave Rio the greatest gift of selfless love possible by setting him free from his pain and suffering and allowing the vet to help him move on to the Rainbow Bridge.
Never question that you did the right thing -- it was definitely the best thing for Rio and I know he appreciates how much you care to let him go.
Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord

Author unknown
Fly high, soar free sweet Rio; rest peacefully now wee lad.

Sometimes birds die faster than you can get vet help for them. Like notice something serious at night, and when contact a vet in the morning, they can pass faster than you can get to the vets office. You did the best you could, just there were no good choices to save your bird offered to you.
