Default Such a mess!

Hi! I haven't posted here in awhile, been busy with school, but I will try to post more often now. I have a bit of a dilema, my budgies make a terrible mess and my parents are not too happy about it. Poop is flung out of the cage, there is seed hulls everywhere (more on the floor then in the cage) and feathers galore. There also seems to be a fine dust that settles on everything in my room (where they are kept), its not just normal dust, it happens in any room the birds are in. I have never really seemed to notice it before but now I sure am! I have a good little dust buster that I use every single day to clean up the mess they make under the cage but its getting out of control. I find that everything settles to the bottom of the cage underneith the grate thing and when they fly around in the cage it gets swept up and onto the floor. My room is currently being re-done it was getting so bad, and they need to go back in that room, but I need to find a solution to this problem first.
This is the cage:

(except mine has two large doors)

There are 7 budgies and 1 cockatiel living in there.

So basicly I need to contain the mess to INSIDE the cage. My parents think I should cover certain parts of the cage with plexglass, something that I could take off easily and clean because it would become covered with poop within no time (better then my walls!). Either that or rehome a few of the birds (as I think I may have too many in there)...which I don't want to do but it may come to this. It did cross my mind at one point to rehome all of them and use their cage for my rats but I quickly slapped myself and thought how could I They are my babies and I love them so much, I can't imagine what it would be like without them.
Any ideas or suggestions will be much appreciated!

You know we had the same problem and every time I cleaned by the next morning it would look like I never cleaned! We came up with a solution and maybe it will be helpful to you as well.

We found a cardboard box about 4" bigger than the cage on all four sides. Then we cut it down to just 2.5" so it ended up a large "short" box. It REALLY helps because the box catches most everything including molting feathers by about 90%. I have only to clean the area only once a week now, and just use the handheld vacuum every other day inside the box.

Good luck.

Sorry to get a little off topic but...

Although your cage does look big, I do not think it is big enough for 6 budgies and a tiel. Tiels should also, not be housed with budgies because of their passive behavior, which will bully the tiel, especially 6.

Now, back on topic

I know what you mean about mess, I constantly clean and it's never clean for more than an hour. I use a barrier on all four sides of my cage and it doesn't really help. When my budgies decide to fly franctically, feathers puff out of the cage and it's like I have a fourth budgie.

I don't really have any strategies to keeping the mess level down, I just clean it up when I see it.

Over the years I have seen in the back section of Bird Talk Magazine people who make Cage Panties. If you can run a sewing machine in a straight line these are pretty easy to make. The Cage Pantie is material with an elastic strap at the top that should be fit just above the seed doors. The bottom of the pantie has a draw string to allow you to set a trash can under the cage and empty out the mess it has caught. A cage that has legs would require a different design. I would think maybe a pantie that had elastic on both the top and the bottom to allow the mess to fall back into the cage.

The problem with starting to use plexiglass sides is air circulation as well as heat retention. Plexiglass sides also have to be cleaned often to look nice.

Kerry beat me too it, i was going to suggest making a seed liner that goes around the base of the cage. The dust is coming from the 'tiel

those dust busters are great, i don't think i could cope without mine! I only got 2 budgies in one cage and they make enough mess for me to clean several times a day.

With the seed and food being thrown on the floor all the time it's likely to attract mice or rats even. Yuk Hope you find some solution

I was told by other budgie enthusiasts that my cage would comfortably hold 8 budgies, I'll get the dimensions when I get home from school to give you guys an idea of how big this cage really is. And yes, I know housing a tiel with budgies is not usually a good idea but they've all lived together for about 2 years now and get along fine. I once took Jake (the tiel) out and away from his friends but he got really depressed and just sat on the bottom of the cage the whole time. He is not tame so the budgies are his companions.
Yep, I do let them out every night, they are all flighted so get lots of exercise by flying around my room. I have to keep my eye on them though because my rats are in the same room, but the rats cage is near the ground so they leave it alone. (And Elwood_Blues, the mess DOES attract rats! You should see my guys scamper to underneith the bird's cage to discover what goodies they have left for them! LoL! )

Ok back on topic, thanks everyone for the suggestions, they've been very helpful, will get back to you once I've decided what to do!
