Default New Owner Information - The Basics

Hi all! I'm wondering if I could get your input and opinions on something.

I'm in the process of finding homes for all my precious babies, and will be sending home in a few weeks. The people that have selected a chick to take home are all wonderful people. Some of them have had budgies before, and some of them are brand new owners full of questions, which I am more than happy to answer all day long

I was thinking of doing up a short document on some basics that will help answer some questions that newbies (and maybe be a refresher for previous owners) may have before bringing home a new bird.

I will touch on the following basics, let me know if I should add anything, or take anything out. Or, let me know if i'm wasting my time entirely by doing this up.....

Cage size, toys, perches, cleaning.
Pellets, sprouts and general nutrition.
Vet info, with contact information to our local Avian Vet.
Bird Safety Hazards (teflon, scented candles, chemical sprays, unsafe plants)
And of course I'll add a link to this wonderful forum !!

These are just the quick basics that i can think of off the top of my head. Is there anything else major that I've overlooked?

I think you could add to the list things about illnesses, like how to identify symptoms before they get too bad and making sure to take them to the vet often...

And TB is a very useful source! It's a great idea to add a link to it

I'd suggest you add information on setting up a birdie first aid kit and the importance of having an "emergency fund" so there is never an issue of having the financial means necessary to care for the budgie(s) if they become ill or injured at any time.

Michelle,

You may also want to address the importance of quarantine in case they already have a bird - or if they decide to get another bird in the future.

All the above suggestions are great!

Just in case they don't know or doubt what you tell them (which they shouldn't!), I would add something about how to tell the gender of young budgies as compared to older budgies, and add information about the fact that each budgie has a unique personality that can't determine gender on its own.

This is great Michelle. It's nice to have budgie breeders that are not only knowledgeable, but care enough to give a handout. Very professional .

The list looks awesome and with the additional suggestions here too. How about adding in the danger section, about predatory other pets? Cats, dogs, ferrets, etc.

Maybe have a section with info on how to get their budgie to trust them? (I know you have them pretty hand/people tame, but they might not trust new people)
