Default Need help- my budgie will no longer have a suitable owner

Hello, and thanks in advance for reading my thread.

I'm a junior in high school and have a little over a year left to spend with my budgie (Ravio) before I go to college. I will live on campus, away from home.

I am the last child left in the household, and I cannot trust my parents to take care of Ravio. They are extremely reluctant to feed her or clean her cage, and often move her outside because she's "too noisy." They do this with no regards for the weather and often forget to take her in after dark or when it rains.

I already have trouble controlling how they treat Ravio, because I spend all day at school. They need me to remind them to do something as simple as taking her back indoors. I can't imagine what would happen without me around at all. I believe they are among the people who don't understand that adopting a bird carries the same responsibility as a cat or dog.

In short, my parents will be the only ones left in the house to take care of Ravio and are far from suitable owners for her. With what free time I have, I give as much attention as possible to Ravio, but I feel like it's not enough and soon I will not be there to care for her at all.

We were all very naive about caring for birds when we adopted her, approximately 3 years ago. So I feel that even with me, Ravio doesn't get the care she deserves. Especially since my parents won't let me take her out of the cage, I feel guilty that she has to be trapped there all day. I feel guilty about plenty of other things, but mainly that.

Ravio still trusts me despite all of this, she preens my face through the cage bars and likes to accept fruit from me (apples are her favorite). If I'm her only friend, I don't want to leave her alone with my parents.

I think the best option may be to have someone else adopt her before I leave (and I feel like I should have done this much sooner). I don't have any friends or relatives who can take her in, though, so I'm not sure who to seek out.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

It definitely sounds as though it will be in Ravio's best interest for her to be re-homed to someone who can give her the love, care and attention she deserves.

It would be helpful to have additional information regarding Ravio:

Current Location: (Country/City/State)
Age:
Did you get her from a breeder or pet-store:
Current Diet:
Any health Issues:

Will her cage and accessories go with her when she is rehomed?

There may be someone on the forum near you who would be suitable to take her.
Otherwise, you can put an add in Hoobly, Craigslist etc.

Remember that you do NOT have to release her to anyone you are uncomfortable with.

Does the person have other pets?
What kind?
Do they have children?
Who will be the primary care-giver?
Do they have an Avian Vet lined up in case she needs medical care in the future for an illness or injury?

The more information you provide and the more information you seek to acquire, the better the match will be in finding Ravio a new home.

Edit to add:
If necessary you can also consider surrendering Ravio to a Rescue or even a local humane society or animal shelter and let them find a home for her:

I would be interested in adopting your sweet Ravio. I will send you a PM.

Minigrace and Luthier -- it would be wonderful if this works out for the two of you!

Please let us know how things progress.

Best wishes!
