Default Leaving my budgie whilst I'm on holiday?

I'm going on holiday at some point this summer and will have to leave Monty behind. She will be looked after by a family friend who will pop in and feed her, give her fresh water everyday and talk to her. Monty is a single budgie and is very closely bonded with me and my family and the thought of leaving her makes me feel sick! I'm worried that she'll feel abandoned and will get lonely due to being on her own for a week (apart from our friend visiting.) Will she be okay with this arrangement or is there anything else I can do?

I don't think it is a good idea to leave her alone, even though your friend will pop in every day, especially as she is an only budgie. You should drop her at someone's house, or get a pet-sitter.

This arrangement is something that a lot of people have to do when going away due to the difficulty of getting a place for birds to stay and that most places that will take birds will have taken others birds and there's the concerns about the healthy of the other birds that have been in care there.

How much time do you spend with Monty each day?

I believe what you are suggesting doing is going to be the easiest and most sensible thing for you and Monty if it's not possible for your friend to take Monty in- and of course it isn't always possible for that kind of commitment from other people as it will disrupt their lives.

If possible and if you spend a lot of time with Monty I would try and normalise spending less time with him nearer the time. If you spend all your time with him except for his bedtime then he is going to feel lonely.
So maybe leave the radio on in the room his in and do something else in a different room- even if you have to move his cage into a different room for a while.

You can put the radio on for him and just make sure he has lots of toys to play with to help with you being absent.

(and I just realised I called Monty a boy all the way through this post and now don't want to go and change it all, sorry Monty!).

Lots of toys, replacements of destructible toys if she enjoys those. You could use a timer switch to arrange for a radio to come on and off. Would she enjoy looking out of the window? Trial different cage positions now to assess her interest, though I'd make sure that part of the cage would always be shaded and appear more protected in case she saw something that she wanted to hide from.

You could consider what your friend's home is like (is it similar to yours in terms of noise/liveliness levels?) and if Monty might be happier having a little holiday there, though that would add another list of dos & don'ts for your friend to agree to.

Perhaps it would be useful to reduce your time with her for a few days prior to your holiday, so it isn't such a big change, and if possible, to have your 1:1 time with her at the times your friend plans to visit.

We were told that she was a boy when we first got her and only recently found out that she is a girl, so don't worry she's used to being call he!

Thankyou! It looks like something she'd love, I'm going to order one nearer the time
