Default Is my new budgie sick?

I bought my budgie a week ago. He sat on his perch for 3 days and didn't make a sound. I bought him a swing and a bell and it's like he suddenly came to life. He was chirping and hopping around and playing on his swing. It was great! I thought he was happy. He did this for a couple of days. Then for the past 2 days, all he's been doing is sitting by his food dish, eating a whole lot, pooping and sleeping. I haven't heard a peep out of him. He definitely hasn't played or moved much at all. I'm so worried. I figured it's a good sign that he's eating, but what happened to my happy bird?

Welcome to the forums,

Your happy bird is still in the process of settling in to his new home and while its great that he has already shown a bit of his playful side, he may still not have enough confidence to fully explore the cage and to open up more.
You can encourage your budgie to sing by having some background sound in the room he is in. Turning the radio or TV on should do the trick.

Very young budgies will also need extra rest throughout the day.
They will get sudden bursts of energy and later on will need a power nap or two.
It would be helpful if you could post a photo of your budgie.

Since we don't have 24/7 access to your budgie to truly make a more educated assessment of his condition/behaviour and as new budgie owner you are getting worried, you can always book the first appointment for a wellness check at the avian vet specialist.

I hope all goes well with your new budgie friend!

Hi there and to the forums!

Congratulations on your new budgie! S/he sounds adorable and we'd love to meet them when you get a chance

Aluz has given some great advice. With time, your little one will settle in more to his environment and become more receptive to his toys and surroundings

Be sure to read through the forum's many resources, such as the Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference), to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care practices.

If you have any questions after doing so, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

Cheers!

aluz has given you excellent advice.
It generally takes at least a couple of weeks for a budgie to settle into his new environment.

If you haven't taken him in for a well-birdie check-up, it's always a good idea to do so when you get a new bird.

Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma.
This is important as "regular" vets will often overlook symptoms that are quickly obvious to an Avian Vet.
When you rely on anyone who has not had training in Avian diagnosis and care, you may be delaying effective treatment.
This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recovery than it would have if you seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.

Distinction between an Avian Vet and a Vet that "Will See Birds"

Having your new budgie examined by an Avian Vet allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet in case your bird needs care for an injury or illness in the future. Additionally, it is always helpful for the vet to have a baseline for your bird to refer to should it need future treatment.

He came out of his food dish today so I was able to snap a picture. His name is Buddy.

And can someone please tell me how to add his pic to my profile? Thanks

Your Buddy is gorgeous, he is not a baby budgie but he is fairly young.
Looking at him, I'd say he is about 5 months old.
