Just for a sanity check on my part, today Thula Thula has mostly just been sitting on her perch. I havent seen her play with any toys at all although she has been eating and pooping regularly. Everytime I approach the cage she looks like she might be shivering but I cant tell if she is or not when Im not close to her. I cut off the AC and the shivers dont seem as intense. I have also seen her opening and closing her beak quite a bit. I looked around online for reasons for these things and it seems both chould have a variety of sources. Do you think she is just nervous/stressed considering her recent events plus having already been held twice to change cages? She seemed more active yesterday, but this is her first day in the new cage. Ive been trying to play music for her and I covered the cage sides with a towel leaving just the front open.

And using the eyes for reference, am I right in guessing she is over 8 months old, probably about a year?

Hi Holly and to the forums!

I can't believe I'm so late to the party around here, but I will say that I'm so glad you've rescued Thula! She's a sweetheart and it sounds like she couldn't have landed with better people

You're doing great with her so far and I'm glad you're brushing up on your research, too. The forums are great for that as well--if you have any questions after reading through things, be sure to ask!

From that picture, she does have fully developed irises, so I would say that yes, she is over or at least a year old I also think it is definitely a bit of stress right now in the new cage, although she'll get used to it soon, she will be more withdrawn and agitated for a bit. Playing music for her is certainly a great way to help her feel safer!

What a beautiful girl! I look forward to hearing lots more about her

Thanks for the second opinion! I just wanted to pick another persons brains a bit. When it comes to new animals or pets I go research crazy and ask a ton of questions. I actually bought a book and have a whole binder started with crested/gargoyle gecko information that Ive been gathering this year to get one in the fall. It was that cage she went into when I first found her, I may have to put the gecko on hold now that a birds in the picture. 😂 Naturally, my lack of prior research on parakeets has left me slightly panicked lol

Well, you're doing great so far It's definitely a great habit to want to be as informed as possible before bringing a pet into the family--keep up the good work

Good job helping this budgie or she would most likely not survive.
Make sure she drinks, that she knows where her water dish is.

I'd leave the mirror for now. She is so stressed out, seeing her own image might calm her down and relax her a little.

Opening beak could mean high stress level/trying to get more air thru an open mouth.

hi and well done for rescueing this little budgie. Hopefully you will find her family and she will be able to return home to the person she is familiar with but sometimes this does not happen and if this is one of these times then it is wonderful that you are already thinking of offering her a home. A cage would be way better than a tank if you can manage it and one of the things you might want to give her is an Avian probiotic. I hope she starts to build up soon and gain confidence. some eggfood too might help build her up. If she continnues to have a dirty vent you might have to manually clean it for her...also if you are able as soon as possible I would bring her to an Avian Vet for a check up .You have done a wonderful job in an emergency situation. way better than Id have managed to do...Thank you fir taking the little one in ...she is so lucky to have come to perch on your rose bush.
I see her in the cage she looks lovely...she will hopefully stop stressing soon and settle in real fast. I love the name you gave her too. Thula you are Beautiful

I left the mirror in yesterday but when I got home there was no poop on that side of the cage, so I pulled it in case the reflection was scaring her. If she still prefers the food side over ex mirror side today Ill go ahead and put it back. She seems to not like getting off the wood perch thing, but her food and water both touch it. I havent seen her drink, but I have seen her eat so she knows its there. I was thinking about maybe waiting a week to take her to a vet, I dont really have a smaller cage for transport and I want to have her a little more calm before a new adventure. I do want to get her looked as soon though, vet checks are always important. As far as the food, I may try to make a budgie egg recipe tomarrow, they seem pretty easy. I need to make sure I have a pot or pan thats not toxic though. I think our pans may be, but our pots are not. She was already a bit more behaved last night when I was feeding her/changing out water bowls and cleaning the cage. Rather than flying like a wild maniac as soon as my hand went in, she just quickly scooted along the ledge to the other side.

Given all she's been through, I believe little Thula is settling into her new environment quite well. It's normal for you not to see her drinking. Budgies's take tiny sips and usually when you are looking. As long as her poops are regular and well formed with both the white urate and dark feces, you know she is eating and drinking just fine.

It is not necessary to put the mirror back in the cage.
She doesn't need it to get acclimated to her new environment, especially since it will simply be removed again at a later date.

It is absolutely wonderful that you have taken little Thula in, at least for now. It sounds like you are a great caretaker for her! I can't offer any advice, as everyone else has beat me to it, and you seem to be doing great, but I just wanted to say keep up the great work! And I hope you are able to find her owners!
