I never thought of that! Very true! The cage we have for the chinchilla must have .75 or 1 inch spacing. Luckily only one cat has front claws and she generally doesnt care about anything. I feel a lot better about it now. Thanks for the tips!

I agree that hanging cages are not the best option, but if you place the cage in a corner where it is protected by walls on two sides, it may provide a modicum of additional security.
However that is not a guarantee the cats won't be able to jump up to the cage and knock it off the hanger.

It is very important to have 1/2" bar spacing (anything larger is potentially dangerous for the budgie),
but the bar spacing in itself will not prevent a dangerous situation should your cats get into the room with the bird.

The stress of being around the predatory animals, the potential for the cats knocking the cage over and the bird getting out (only to be injured or killed) are very real as is the possibility of the cat managing to scratch the budgie through the bars of the cage.

The best thing to do is to put a sign on the door of the room to keep the door closed at all times.
Always check where the cats are before opening the door.
If you intend to give the budgie out-of-cage time in the room, you should put a slide bolt on the inside of the door.
Whomever is in the room supervising the budgie's play time should be sure to bolt the door so it isn't accidentally opened while the bird is out of the cage.

If you have budget it would be nice to consider getting some chewing toys made with natural wood so she can chew on it and play, will help her pass time, reduce stress level and reduce boredom and also helps keep her beak trimmed

She looked a LOT better today. MUCH more active and alert. I made it to petsmart and upgraded the cage. Thoughts? Ill add more toys later on. I added one of those cuttlebone things, the rope ladder, feeders, a mirror, the gears with the bell, and the water bath bowl thing as well as the trail mix hanging treat thing

The new cage looks nice! I'm sure she will like it! Have you already picked a name if you are going to keep her?

Good work with rescuing.
I'd remove the mirror from her new cage though.

It's wonderful you've bought her a nicely sized cage and are ensuring she is well cared for.

If you do not locate the owner and end up keeping her, I would recommend you replace the dowel rod perches in the cage with natural wood perches. It is important to have perches of varying diameters to exercise the budgie's feet and legs as well as to prevent pressure sores.

Pressure Sores

You can find examples of the perches that are recommended in the link below.

Essentials to a Great Cage

Thank you for the advice! The petsmart near us is just a mini one and the cheapest cage they had was a tiny $33 one. We talked to the lady and she said if we find the owner we can return the cage as long as it is sanitized and looks brand new so we decided to go ahead and get a decent sized cage for her.

As a side note, the cat problem has been dealt with! I was really worried about them getting in because my door was broke and the cats could just push it hard to get in. I managed to get it fixed last night though so now the room is 100% cat proof

That's excellent news regarding the cage and regarding the door being fixed!
