It is surreal to be writing this update...
Since his dramatic incident on January 27th, Prince has not had to wear his cone nor have I found blood on him or anywhere in the cage. This is MIRACULOUS. For his entire life, Prince has had to wear his cone at once least every month to prevent self-mutilation, and in the past year it had increased to twice a month. We got Bowie on December 19th and introduced him to Prince around a month later. Bowie desperately wanted to be friends with Prince, but Prince was indifferent towards him and mostly ignored him. I was quite dismayed when Prince had his episode in January because I'd hoped Bowie would keep him occupied since they were living in the same cage. After Prince had healed from his injury (with precautionary antibiotics from the vet) I decided to search for a larger cage for the two. I found one that was perfect in size, so I bought it and moved the birds in. I was unsure of what to do with Prince as the vet had strongly discouraged me from continuing the use of the cone. So I left him to see how long it would take for him to reopen the wound. And guess what? Since being in the larger cage, Prince and Bowie have become best friends! They are adorable and spend a large portion of the day socializing with each other. Prince seems completely disinterested in his wound. We are going on three months since his last incident... I am in utter disbelief. Bowie is saving Prince's life!
I'm very glad to hear that Prince is doing so well now.
From what you've written it sounds as though Prince was self-mutilating because his cage was too small and he was bored.
Having the additional space and a friend whose company he enjoys has given Prince a new lease on life. Congratulations!
