My question is pretty much as the topic has it. I have been offering my budgies a little bit of raw carrot recently -- I cut and quarter a 2" [more or less] section of carrot, then cut the edges with a knife so it will be kind of "barbed" or bristly, then hang the prepared pieces in their cages with a treat clip. So far, the only reaction they have had to this is to eye it most suspiciously and keep their distance. I have gone so far as to munch voraciously on pieces of carrot for their benefit, holding forth with great enthusiasm about how tasty it is -- which is a true labor of love on my part, because I hate raw carrots! My own tastes aside though, I know carrots are very good for them and that they would be better off eating a little now and then.
How can I convince them this new, orange-colored stuff is food? For what it's worth, they are all great fans of greenfood -- most often romaine or redleaf, sometimes spinach [the universal least favorite!], dandelion, or parsley. Other than resisting the carrots, they eat fine: I give them a 50/50 pellet-seed mix, millet and an occasional plain dry rice cake for treats (they might not eat much of the rice cakes, but they sure have fun tearing them up!), and greens every day.
i know exactly how you feel.. My little one doesn't want to eat anything besides seeds, millet and apples T^T i've been trying to get her to eat pellets but she only ate a few because i tricked her into it.. I've been trying carrots too. What everyone else told me to do is cut the carrots into little pieces and put it in their pellets/seeds and mix it, so they'll have to eat the carrots to get to the pellet/seeds. Or you can put the layer of carrots (cut up of couse) on top of their seeds that way they have to eat the carrots to get to the seeds/pellets. Another way is getting the carrot wet and dunking it in seeds/pellets and cover the carrots with it so you cant see it and as they pick to eat their food they'll eventually get a bit of carrots on their beak and eat it. I haven't had luck with mine so far but hopefully you'll have better luck
hope they like it!
hmm, its normal for your birds to avoid carrot because its new to them, it may take a while for them to start nibbling on it..
yesterday was my first time to give my birds carrots, i left it under the cage where they can see it.. at first they didnt want to go near it~ after i took a bath i saw them eating the carrot im very happy since my birds are not a fan of greens... but im doing my best to eat their greens.. we have the same problem but opposite..
some even took 3months or more to make their birds eat veggies.. so it may take time.. lets just hope they eat their carrot soon..
TIP: place some seeds on and around the carrot.. that may help...
My story of feeding carrots goes like this.
I tried chopping it up and giving it to them in with their soak mix and they didn't even touch their soak mix that day. So I noticed that whatever I put in their "treat" dish they would go over and investigate. So I tried finely grating it and putting it in by itself and they loved it that way. So that was my "trick" to getting mine to eat carrots. Good Luck.
I put a wedge of carrot between the bars at the opening of the door and they will jump down and chew at the carrot. I have a rope perch attached to the front of the cage and they can perch there as well and nibble away.
It took awhile for mine to warm up to carrots. I grate them into thir small flat dish that I put all their fresh veggies in and they eat them now, but it took a few months and they won't touch cooked carrots..just raw.
All you can really do is keep offering them carrots. It sounds like you are doing everything you can. Maybe instead of hanging them with a clip try offering them in a dish with other fresh veggies like broccoli sprinkled with a little seed or millet. It may be one of those things that just takes time though too as in my case.
i agree with everyone i had the same probelm, i just kept trying them, i put it in with their greens i mean somedays they wont touch any or just throw it on the floor and i have to keep getting it up but somedays they will fight over it just keep trying you'll get there!
