Hey, everyone. New to this forum and new to the world of budgies. My daughter picked a beautiful lutino for her birthday, (100% sure, all yellow, red eyes) but I just can't figure out if it's a he or a she. It's cere is definitely a pinkish purple, however it is not a solid color everywhere. Meaning there appears to be white around the nostrils. From everything I've read, males won't have that white at all, just solid pink/purple. Is that correct? And the females would have that white, but with more of a blue or brown. So, I'm stumped. It seems to have the color of a male, but distribution of a female. Lol.

Here is a picture.

Hi there and to Talk Budgies!

It's great to have you here with us; you couldn't have come to a better place to learn even more about these beautiful birds!

Congratulations on your new budgie friend, she's adorable! The photo is definitely not the best for determining gender; I'm unable to see the color of the cere properly enough. From the little I can see, this little bird appears to be female. However, we are unable to confirm that for sure until we have a better photo

As s/he settles in, be sure to spend lots of time in the same room with her, doing a quiet activity like spending time on the computer, reading, or just sitting near him and talking to her. Also, you should leave calming music on in the room when you're not there, as total silence means danger to budgies.

Be sure not to try and touch her or put your hand in the cage for at least two weeks while she settles in. After she is more comfortable with you and his surroundings, (after the two weeks), you can slowly begin introducing her to your hand, by placing it in the cage as far away from her as possible, slowly moving it closer over the course of several weeks.

Additionally, be sure to look through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to stay up to date on all the best practices for caring for budgies. If you have any questions after reading through anything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

We look forward to seeing you and your adorable budgie around the forums!

Cheers!

Thank you so much for the feedback! The music is a good tip. I never knew silence was seen as threatening to them. I just figured the bird would be relieved, whew, those annoying humans are finally gone! Lol. We have had him/her a little bit now already (so used to saying him because my daughter declared boy. Lol.) and he's pretty much "finger trained". Never really bit at all. When I first brought Lemonade (fitting name lol) home and had to pick him up to get him into the cage, he bit, but as soon as he realized I wasn't going to hurt him, he stopped and was fine. There I go with the he/him even though strong female possibility. I apologize for the picture quality. I know it's really hard to see. Bad lighting plus cheap phone camera plus bird who says no, I will not say cheese and smile. Lol. I shall just have to keep trying. *Fingers crossed* And thanks again! ?

Although the second photo is difficult to see, I'm able to better discern the color of the cere and I'm able to see that the cere is a uniform, light pink. If this is what you see in real life, you do in fact have a male

The glare in the first photo must have made it look like white around the nares (nostrils), whereas I don't see any white in the latest photo, though it's not the clearest.

Lemonade is the perfect name for him!
