Smile Help with type and sex please?

Hi there! This is my budgie I am getting today. I was hoping someone could help me figure out what type and what sex. I have spent hours looking around and am just more confused! The tail feathers are all white, since I didn't get that in the pictures. And the feet are more of a bluish gray, not pink. The cere is a light blue. Thanks so much for any help!

Hi there and to Talk Budgies!

Your prospective little budgie is adorable!!

She is a little girl, based on her light blue cere. Young females have light blue or white ceres which turn brown when they are in breeding condition, whereas young males have pink or purplish ceres with no hint of white that turns blue when they are adults.

As for mutation, she is a greywing cobalt violet dominant pied budgie What a pretty girl!

In preparation for your new budgie, be sure to look through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to stay up to date on all the best practices for caring for budgies. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

Keep us posted on how things go, and I look forward to seeing you and your little one around the forums!

Cheers!

Hi welcome

That is a beautiful budgie! StarlingWings meant to say "greywing" above, not "greeting".. sometimes we hate autocorrect .

Please take some time to read through the links given upon sign up, as well as the Articles, and Stickies at the top of the major sections such as healthcare, diet, behavior, taming and bonding. There you will find answers to a lot of common questions. If you still need help after reading, we're here .

Looking forward to updates... and more pics!

Thank you to both of you! I admit I was having a hard time figuring out what greeting meant! Ha ha. I agree she is a pretty budgie. I was sort of hoping she would be a boy because it will be my only bird and I am hoping to teach it to talk. But maybe she can still learn. I talk nonstop, lol.

Thanks for catching that, Julie

All budgies can learn to talk, regardless of their gender It depends on their personal inclination to talk!

Thank you for fixing my picture mess. I was having issues. I've got him home and now I need to come up with a name for him! So you think he is a boy and he is called a pied budgie? Does he have a color name or anything else I need to know? I am just letting him be because he is nervous.

I just thought of one other question, I'm sorry! Is this bracelet on his leg supposed to stay there or do I remove it?

You're very welcome.

When your take your budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a well-birdie checkup, you can have them safely remove the leg-band at that time.
Please do not try to do it yourself.
You could hurt your little bird badly.

Your new budgie will need to settle in to his new home for a couple of weeks.

Budgies are often submissive for the first few days simply because they are terrified.

You can cover the top and three sides of the cage to help the budgie feel more secure. Playing music for him when you aren't around will be helpful as well. Budgies perceive no noise as meaning there may be danger.

Taming and Bonding is all about helping your budgie learn to trust you and it takes a great deal of time and patience on your part.
You should never grab your budgie or force him to be touched.
To bond with your budgie, you need to build his trust in you.
He will have to learn over time that you will not hurt him, grab him and try to force him to allow you to hold him.

To build your budgieís trust, sit by his cage and read, talk or sing quietly to him for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to him so he'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt him .

After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Donít make sudden moves, donít try to touch him .
Let his get used to the idea that the hand is now in his safe place and not harming him .

After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward your budgie. If he becomes agitated, stop moving your hand and just hold very still until he calms down. When he's comfortable with your hand near him , you can offer him a bit of millet or a few seeds. In a few more days, you can begin your taming and bonding sessions.

Always work at your budgie's pace.
Move slowly and talk reassuringly and calmly whenever you interact with him .

Most budgies once they pass the "baby" stage, do not like to be petted or touched.
If your budgie does like to be petted, you should only ever pet his head, neck or chest area.
Stroking a budgie's back and/or tail stimulates its breeding instinct. Bonding means allowing them to choose to be with you.
