Default Unsure if one of my budgies is definitely male

Hi everyone,

I bought two budgies about a week and a half ago from a local pet store, and the guy told me they were both males aged 4 months old.

Russell's (the yellow budgie) cere has patches of blue however there is some brownish colour and I was just a bit unsure if he is definitely male as I've read online some female budgies can have blue patches for hormonal reasons.

Hobbs (the green and yellow budgie) I'm sure is male, however I'm not sure if he is the same age as Russell? His cere is fully coloured and Russell also has a tag on his leg (can't read whats on it) whereas Hobbs doesn't.

Russell's feet also seem a bit pinker than Hobbs'.

I was also wondering, is Russell a recessive pied? I've been googling about it but thought I'd ask the experts

Thanks a million!!

Welcome to the forums!

You do have two gorgeous male budgies there, no doubt about it!
Russell is a single factor golden face possibly sky blue double factor dominant pied budgie. He is not recessive pied since he has developed irises on his eyes and by looking at their colour (white), Russel is much older than 4 months old, he is at the very least close to adulthood (1 year old).
I'm not seeing any brown on his cere, the patchy appearance on the cere (blue, and pinkish/purplish colour) is a normal characteristic of double factor dominant pied budgies

Your dark green normal budgie, Hobbs already has the mature colour on the cere and has some iris development as well. Looking at him I'd say he is about 7 months old.

Thanks so much for your reply and all your knowledge!

Very interesting to know Russell's mutation now, however I am curious as to the whether the pet store guy genuinely didn't know their ages or was just telling fibs. There aren't many pet stores around here but this was the one I trusted the most.

It doesn't matter too much about their age anyway I'm still gonna love them regardless!

Thanks so much again for your reply and for clarifying everything for me!

You're most welcome!

Unfortunately, it's common for pet store employees to not give accurate information and in most of the cases this comes from an overall lack of knowledge. At least the employee knew something and was right on your budgies' gender.

Best of luck with your gorgeous new boys!

First, I also wanted to welcome you to the forum! Congratulations on your 2 handsome boys! I especially love Russel, but I'm partial to pieds Learning about their mutations is always fascinating! If you're ever interested in learning more or understanding what makes up the mutation, this is a great website:Budgie Mutation And Color Guides - Cute Little Birdies Aviary

It has helped me a lot! And even if you don't own a bird with those mutations, it's interesting learning about the mass variety of mutations that budgies have. When I go to my bird store I love looking at all the budgies and identifying their mutations

I do hope we'll be seeing more of you and your 2 little boys around the forum!
