He'll be ok..... just be sure to put fun new things in there. Budgies are very curious and love new items for mental stimulation.... and once Dicky gets over his pouting stage he'll have fun with his new toys. (And you. ) Also he might feel less frustrated because "budgie mirror friends" don't really do what the budgies want or expect them to do.
So I took out 6 toys all containing mirrors and replaced them with a set of colourful plastic keys, some rings with a bell, some wicker sheets for him to tear up and a set of balls with rattlers inside.
He seems soso about the new toys but he seems calmer, when I put him to bed he jumped to where he normally has a tantrum but instead of going crazy he sort of went to start by whacking the mirror and realised it wasn't there and just jumped into bed and fell asleep.
He has 2 perch mirrors and his bed left with mirrors in them all of which he loves so much, not because of the mirror really but because he can lean and slouch on them when napping so I will keep those in for a while and see what hes like, I will keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get all angry with them.
How do they work with regards to pooping? I dont know if its specific to Dicky or not but he has a very hard time keeping clean down in his vent area and I am so paranoid about him getting clogged up. If he was to sit on a flat area like that would he just make a mountain of poops through the night eventually sticking to his cotton wool vent area?
Even if he just accidentally sleeps in an area that has a perch near his vent I wake up to him with a big lump of poop hanging from his feathers that I have to wash off.
As a quick update Dicky seems a lot calmer in general since taking most of the mirrors out.
He goes to bed with no tantrums now and instead of whacking a hanging mirror when excited he will go climbing and want my attention instead.
He still has his bed mirror and 2 perch mirrors but I will need to get replacements before removing those as they are where he likes to sit the most, hes not really interested in the mirrors but just the perches themself.
I ordered some wooded chew toys and some more bell style toys for him to start a rotation of toys excluding any mirrors.
