So I took out 6 toys all containing mirrors and replaced them with a set of colourful plastic keys, some rings with a bell, some wicker sheets for him to tear up and a set of balls with rattlers inside.

He seems soso about the new toys but he seems calmer, when I put him to bed he jumped to where he normally has a tantrum but instead of going crazy he sort of went to start by whacking the mirror and realised it wasn't there and just jumped into bed and fell asleep.

He has 2 perch mirrors and his bed left with mirrors in them all of which he loves so much, not because of the mirror really but because he can lean and slouch on them when napping so I will keep those in for a while and see what hes like, I will keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get all angry with them.

Why don't you try replacing the mirror "bed" with a lovely little platform perch for Dickie to lie on to sleep?

It would be much better for him in the long run.
You can find several different types on-line.

Round Platform Perch

Corner Platform Perch

Comfy Clam Perch

How do they work with regards to pooping? I dont know if its specific to Dicky or not but he has a very hard time keeping clean down in his vent area and I am so paranoid about him getting clogged up. If he was to sit on a flat area like that would he just make a mountain of poops through the night eventually sticking to his cotton wool vent area?

Even if he just accidentally sleeps in an area that has a perch near his vent I wake up to him with a big lump of poop hanging from his feathers that I have to wash off.

As a quick update Dicky seems a lot calmer in general since taking most of the mirrors out.

He goes to bed with no tantrums now and instead of whacking a hanging mirror when excited he will go climbing and want my attention instead.

He still has his bed mirror and 2 perch mirrors but I will need to get replacements before removing those as they are where he likes to sit the most, hes not really interested in the mirrors but just the perches themself.

I ordered some wooded chew toys and some more bell style toys for him to start a rotation of toys excluding any mirrors.

That's great to hear! I'm glad that Dicky has adjusted well and has opened up more to you.

Great news...! You'll be a lot happier (and so will Dicky) once all of the mirrors are gone.

And know that you're not alone.... I don't have any mirrors.... but, I do have a shiny plastic disco ball... and it may have to get removed soon, because my bird is becoming obsessed with it.

Otherwise he loves playing with chew toys, and chewing wood and it's helping a lot with expending his energy.

Glad to hear the good news. (And I *love* the perches you made!)

I'm still confused why companies sell budgie toys with a budgie on the packaging that's just mirrors if its so apparent they get frustrated with them.

Seems immoral......

I agree.

Unfortunately, many of the budgie products that are sold are not thoroughly checked or researched, which is what results in toys with loose rope fringes, unsafe metals, fabric, or mirrors.

Because of this, it has fallen to the bird owners to make the best decisions for our birds!

Dicky is now working up the courage to go and test out his new toy:

Removed the chain and shortened it so its not inside his cage, he once got his foot stuck in a chain so I make sure that all chains are removed or out of reach.
