Default This $1.99 Foraging Dowel was a huge hit...

I bought this foraging dowel (it's basically a foot toy for larger birds) and I thought it would be fun to put Nutriberries in the holes.

Foraging Dowel|Foraging Toys from DrsFosterSmith.com

Biz loves this thing. I ended up putting it on top of a perch ( a y-shaped perch with 3 prongs) by slipping one of the perch prongs through the hole and resting the dowel on top.

He just loves it. Chews it, sits on it all the time. I think there are many things that could be done with this and ways it could be affixed in a cage.

I'll definitely buy another one after this one wears out. But the instructions also said you could re-wrap it with more rope and beads.

This looks very cool! What's the rope on it like? Does it fray, or come apart in a dangerous way? I have to put an order in for the boys' food soon and I might just get this.

Hi Kristen . . . that's a great question. I'm still wondering exactly (& researching) which ropes are the safest. ... I'd love to get feedback from others on this.

What I can tell you is that it's paper rope. But not super-soft. Biz chews on it, and it comes off in small pieces, that Biz rolls around in his mouth but doesn't digest. The way it frays reminds me of how the Planet Pleasures items fray, so I think it's safe. If the Drs. F&S site didn't say it was paper, I might have thought it was palm leaf.

I took 2 photos & merged them -- on top is the side that hasn't been chewed, and on the bottom is the chewed side. It kind of crumbles which I think makes it safe...?

Yes, paper rope is perfectly safe for birds

I'm glad that Biz likes his new toy so much!

Thanks Star! Is hemp rope regarded as safe? I know that leather cord is safe.
