Budgie Breeding Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility.

Default How far out of breeding condition can they produce fertile eggs?

I have 2 boys and 2 girls. All are under 5 months of age except 1 male whole is 2 years old.

I was under the impression that the budgies could not produce a fertile clutch unless in breeding condition. And I assumed this meant peak breeding condition.

I was having a read on cutelittelbirdiesaviary last night and she spoke of budgies being able to breed not in peak condition, something that could endanger chicks and parents.

When she is saying this, how far *out of condition* are we talking they can produce fertile eggs?

I ask because if my boys and girls play together when shall we separate them to discourage unwanted pregnancy? I do not want one of my girls to be pregnant before she is old enough for safety reasons.

So I know they can get pregnant at peak breeding condition, and I now know according to that site that they 'could' get pregnant when they are not at "peak" condition, which I'm assuming is when the ceres are halfway between out of condition and not. But, and this may sound absurd, can the female become pregnant when she's completely out of condition? If my boys and girls are playing together do I have to worry about her mating and producing fertile eggs if her cere has not changed at all?

If so I'll just have them play seperately until they are all old enough.

Thanks so much

Like other animals, budgies can conceive fertile eggs at any time, and their "breeding condition" only increases their drive to mate, not necessarily their ability to be fertile.

Either way, you should be doing all you can to discourage breeding at this time, and you shouldn't have to worry

Ok! That's good to know. It flet like such a silly question to ask but wanted to be sure.

Ok. when the girls and boys play I will supervise their playing to make sure they don't get up to mischief!
