Jeffrey, it's not uncommon for birds to occasionally have a night fright.
They just get spooked by a light or noise (or sometimes, it seems for no reason at all).

You can leave them uncovered or only partially covering them, or you can leave a night light on for them. When budgies panic at night, because they have poor vision in the dark, they panic and fly around and frighten themselves more.
But ensuring they have a degree of visibility if they have a night fright helps them to calm down quicker and they don't injure themselves.

It can just be a one off. There's no reason to be concerned. You can keep doing what you've always done as this has only happened one time.

Then you should do as I initially suggested, and keep a light on and keep the cage partially uncovered.
You can't prevent a night fright unless there's a known cause, such as a sound or a light frightening them, all you can do is help them not to be so frightened.
Just because it happened once, doesn't mean it will again.
