Default Budgie Roosting Strange At Bedtime

Here is a photo of my budgie, "Yogi" when I put him to bed. He never goes on that perch aside from bedtime. When I put him in there he will climb up and sit on the outside of the ring, sometimes for even a half hour to an hour as I have checked in on him after putting him to bed. It's not that he's being kept up, since I put him in my bedroom with me when I go to bed [so it's quiet] and he has the same strict bed time every night.

However in the morning when I get him up he is inside the ring and I have never woken him up in the morning to find him on the outside. So my question is if this is normal budgie behavior when they're winding down for bedtime, or is it possible he is uncomfortable with his perch?

And FWIW when he's holding on like that, he's holding on vertically and will keep having to move his foot because he slips.

Thank you for your help, sorry for the lengthy post... Just wanted to provide any relevant info!

Yogi is the same as many budgies and likes to perch as high as he can at night.
As you've observed, he can;t maintain that position to sleep, so at some point, he moves into the swing and goes to sleep. The best thing would be to buy a nice new swing that isn't circular for Yogi so that he can settle down at night and be comfortable.

You can also try and move one of his perches to that it's nice and high in the cage. It wants to be as high as it can be at the top, but with enough space, for Yogi to sit on it normally.

I notice it appears you have plastic perches in the cage.
It would be best for you to provide natural wood perches of varying diameters in Yogi's cage.
Those will help to exercise Yogi's feet and lets and help to prevent pressure sores.

Essentials to a Great Cage

Therm is correct with regard to Yogi trying to perch as high as possible. One of my budgies sleeps on top of the wooden beaded grapevine swings I have in their cage.

Hey FaeryBee, it's hard to see in the picture but he has 3 different sized wooden branch perches outside of his cage, along with a few ladders of different sized and then 2 of the generic sized wooden ones on the inside. He only goes in his cage to sleep and eat. However I will be purchasing him a new perch to sleep in so I will make sure it is a wooden one! Thank you for the help.
