Default Shirt Chewing

Hey there, I have two budgies (ones a boy and the other is a girl, age is unknown but i am pretty sure they're young) and I usually put something over their cage so they can sleep or if they are cold. Today, i was tired and I just put a random shirt I had on the cage, and I started noticing that my male had been chewing on it for more than half an hour. Is this normal behavior?

Yes, some budgies do this. I have had two budgies who chewed the cover of their cage. They were both male budgies.

My budgie does this sometimes as well. So I make sure it's a very tight weave cover and not shreddable / ingestible. He loves to nibble my shirt sleeves as well.

Welcome to the forums! You have certainly come to the right place as you will find all you need to know on budgie care here.
The information on the several articles and sticky threads at the top of each section of the forums will be extremely useful and of benefit to you and your budgies.

Budgies of both genders can and will chew and it's up to us as their owners to provide safe materials for them to satisfy their chewing needs.
This can be achieved by getting an assortment of wooden toys for them to chew.
You can get some ideas by looking at this link: Essentials to a Great Cage

As for the shirt you placed as cage cover, since your budgie has spent a considerable amount of time chewing it, it's best to discourage him from doing so (in order to avoid potential health issues from ingestion of the fibres).
If he has no problem with the normal cover you usually use for the cage, then it's best to stick with it.

Hi! to Talk Budgies

It is important that you ensure your budgie can not ingest the fibers from your clothing as they can lead to crop impaction.

Hi there and to the forums!

You've been given excellent advice and resources. Be sure not to leave any rope fringe, frayed cloth/string, or chewable fabric around or in the budgie's cage!

If your budgies like to chew, getting them lots of safe chewing toys (such as those made of palm leaf or yucca) will help them to channel that urge into something else.

Be sure to read through the links provided to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care practices! If you have any questions afterwards, don't hesitate to ask as we'd love to help.

We hope to meet your little ones soon!

Cheers!
