Default My Art & Crafts (on-going)

The last couple of years, since I got the birds, I started to do less art and crafts than I had previously done. The birds slightly (totally) took over my room but in January, I claimed back a small art area.
I have also set myself up a space in the conservatory so that I can so anything that can't be done in my bedroom out there.

Before, I was doing mostly (More) Charcoal Drawings and had a couple of goes with watercolour pencils.

So I've been trying some new things out now, trying to break out from just doing charcoal drawings. While I really enjoy them, sometimes they can be limiting and I can't always achieve what I want too with them.

A lot of this stuff is bad, tbh. It's me finding my way with certain new materials, but as I want to be doing artwork at least once a week, I want to share it with you all.
It's rather Star trek inspired, as you'll see.

So the first thing I wanted to try was a sketch where I didn't trace the image to start with and just drew it from looking at an image.
I was pretty happy with the outcome. Everything seems to be the right proportions and in the right place.

I used a pencil to outline everything then went over it in a fine black pen.
For the colour, I used some pens I got for Christmas called Chameleon pens. You can fade them so you can get a gradual shade of colour, they're pretty nifty. I've used them just as regular pens here.

I then tried another, different angle, drawing free-hand but using my watercolour pencils this time. I wanted this to be an exercise in skin tone as well.

The drawing itself is okay, but I was pleased with the skin tone I achieved.

Next i tried Zoe Saldana, who didn't come out so well on any level.

She has a really beautiful and flawless face which makes it super hard to get right. Wrinkles and marks are a lot better.

I then started another Zoe picture in charcoal before abandoning it due to her perfect, flawless face!

So then I tried something different, using a likeness of Uhura/Zoe (which isn't like either of them) and doing a cute thing, which, is cute, but really doesn't look like anyone, except a young woman.
As Zoe is a young woman, it's still a win. I used the watercolour pencils but didn't add water.

I then decided to do another Spock. I wanted this one to focus on the eyes to see if I could achieve the look I wanted.

This came out pretty well. I was pleased with the eyes, but frustrated with the rest.

Today, Chameleon bought out a range of pencils that are supposed to be great at blending. I have the set ordered.
I'll probably get more of there pens as I have a set of 30, but there was a set before that of 22 so I'm missing some of the more everyday shades, which will give me more range.

Emma,
Your drawings are great!
My favorites are the one of Zoe in charcoal and the last one of Spock.
I'll be looking forward to seeing more drawings when your new pencils and pens come in.

Thanks, Pegg. I love his eyes in that scene and I was pretty pleased with my effort.

Zoe looks so great in the picture- I wish I could have done her justice.

I was wondering when we would get to see more of your fantastic artwork . Really nice new stuff here. The eyes on the last Spock pic are amazing. They look like a photo!

I had to revisit your charcoal drawings too. Those are so exceptionally good!

I'm terribly unproductive!
I really love the charcoal drawings and want to keep doing those as well. I feel the pencils will take a while longer to master for me whereas I'm more comfortable with the charcoals.

Great pictures, and as others have commented Spock's eyes are amazingly realistic. You are really talented.

Just a thought regarding your blending difficulties - do you not think that a different paper may help; as in avoiding the typically slightly textured watercolour paper?

Looking forward to seeing more.

The water colour paper I have is just something that we already had in the house and it's not the best. But as a practice paper, it's good enough.
I do have some new paper for when I get my pencils that isn't textured and I'll have to look into other types I can get for watercolour.

I do have the same issues with the charcoal pictures at times with textures paper. I think I have one lot that isn't as bad as the other.

I'll do some research into it. This is the problem with just jumping in and doing things without knowing what you're doing.
