Hello folks, my birds are really finicky eaters and I've had trouble getting them to eat fresh veggies and fruits. I've been feeding them fruit and veggie products for birds from the bird store until now.

I had to shave the broccoli flowerettes and place it into a dish, then I add this spicy fruit and veggie mix to it and they love it. Unfortunately Kitty chases Toby away but he still gets some.

How do y'all get your birds to eat fruits and veggies? Should I crumble fruit as well? Fresh fruit would be much more difficult to do, and just cutting them into small pieces does no good because they won't touch it.

Thanks so much! ;)

congrats on them trying their brocolli :)

I do mine 2 ways, either chopped in their dish or on their kabob stick.

I wrote something similar yesterday, so far my two boys have rejected everything except Cheerios lol

It's good to read ideas of what others to...some new tactics to try ;)

So far I have had no luck getting my birds to eat fruits and veggies. I've tried almost everything. I've even tried getting the dried birdie fruit from the petstore to mix into their seed. The would pick it up and throw it out! The only success I've had is with baby food. And even then they are still cautious. If any of ya'll want to try feeding your birds baby food, make sure you get the organic brands. I was told that sweet potatoe was a favorite of budgies so I tried that one first. They tried eating it the first time I offered it.

Hi Anna, the kabobs do they have loops at the top and bottom? I was wondering should I hang them or lay them down on a plate? Thanks! :)

Hi Tina, how do you you clip it to the cage? Where do I get a clip strong enough for that? I am in the US. I am sure all the practical stuff is in the UK lol! :D

Baby food is an idea! I shall try the sweet potato. I assume these are the gerber graduates that are more solid? Organic right, I shall remember that.

Hiya Mindy,

I had the same problem as you, the only thing they would eat was broccoli. But now i honestly think they eat more vegies (sadly they still havent taken to fruit) than they do seed!

Here's what i did - because they only ate broccoli, i added other green things in hope of confusing them :o . So i added silverbeet and spinach to start with and i think accidentally they got a taste of the new vegies and decided they werent too bad. After they got used to those 2 vegies and the new tastes, i added corn kernals (not a whole cob to start with - just frozen corn kernals that had been thawed out) - just a couple to start with and slowly added more. Now corn is their fav and there are many fights over the last piece of corn! Just by adding something in a tiny amount new to what they already ate - i think had them eating it accidentally and finding they like it. At first it was just Puff who would eat any of it, but i think that they just followed her out of curiosity thinking they were missing something! Now they eat everything i put in there.

I also have a kebab stick. I bought it from a pet store - it has a clip that hooks onto the cage/aviary - but maybe if you are introducing new things it might be better to mix it up in a bowl/dish so hopefully they eat something new by mistake and really like it!

Also, you could try sprinkling some seed on top and again, while eating the seed they will get the taste of the fruit/vegies you have under.

Good luc, i hope all goes well for you

Thanks for the terrific advice! Can't wait to see what I'm serving up tomorrow! Need to go to the store. :)

Actually, I haven't tried the gerber graduates. You say it's more solid than regular baby food? If it is maybe I'll try it when I run out. I use regular baby food. (safeway organic) The only thing, when I first gave it to them I dipped their millit in it and when they ate it the hulls got stuck all over their faces!

I just take the whole broccoli, cut it right down the middle, and hook the whole thing to the cage. They just love the stem, more then the top part.:D
