:( One of my two budgies randomly died this morning... Mr. Purple seemed like its usual self yesterday. It was chirping as well. I found him on the bottom of the cage this morning, its wing had a deep unexplained gash. Can anyone help me as to why it died all of a sudden?

(I made this post into a separate thread so people would be more likely to see it and reply)...;)

How old was your little guy? Do you have other birds? Could he possibly have had a night fright? (That means that something scared your budgie and he thrashed around in the cage). Sometimes when that happens, they can break blood feathers and then bleed to death. Was there a lot of blood?

I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Purple. Were there any indications of the cause of death when you found him?

Thanks for the support guys... When my sister and i buried Mr Purple.. we discovered that its left foot was a lot skinnier and red and its vent was soiled. Its cere was also flaking off :( But there were no symptoms of it being ill the night before, it was flying around in its cage playing with its mate.

Its companion is a lutino budgie named Mr. Yellow *how original*. Im thinknig of buying a new budgie becoz it seems so lonely (it starts chirping waiting for a reply)...and ive noticed it becoming skinnier. :( Is this the rite thing to do... or will it be too traumatic?

Forgot to mention this, Mr.Purple was around 2 years old. When i found him, it seemed like the gash in its wing had already began to clot, so there wasnt much blood.

sorry to hear about the sudden death.
Yes, you should get a new buddy for your budgie:)
It will be some time before the quarantine is over...you should consider doing this soon. Budgies are not meant to be alone, and most of us cannot be there 24/7 (even if we'd like to:p ) Obviously, Mr. Yellow misses his friend:mad:

I'm sorry to hear about that- a gash could mean a fight but it they were toghether so long its more unlikely that they would fight to death...I heard of other budgies that have though..RIP!

Maybe you should get your other bird checked out. It could be that Mr. Yellow also has a problem, not just grief.

I finally plucked up the courage to buy a new olive budgie today... i didn't want to buy another violet one tho because it would have reminded me of Mr. Purple too much :(. It's sitting happily in a smaller cage atm before i introduce him to Mr. Yellow *fingers crossed*. btw, i was going to take Mr. Yellow to the vet today but it seems he has returned to his normal self already... i saw it pigging out on the seed yesterday :P

HELP! the budgie i bought yesterday seems to be sick! Its vent is soiled and it's constantly trying to pick at it and its stool is dark green and very hard. Also, it seems slightly fluffed up, rocking back and forth, drowsy and 'huffing and puffing'. I put it under a heat lamp already but is there anything else i can do? :(

Can you return it to the place you bought it? They should look after treating it for you.

I thort about taking it back before but they would most likely just swap a new budgie for me and i'd already grown close to mr. green. I think its starting to feel better now, it cleaned itself up and started to eat some millet. Thanks for your help :)

That can often happen to a new budgie; a soiled vent. This usually clears up. However, if you are finding that the situation doesn't improve, then a vet visit would be in order. In fact, it couldn't hurt to bring the little newbie in for a checkup anyway. This serves two purposes: It establishes a relationship with an avian vet early so that if you are ever in an emergency situation with your budgie, you know where and who you can get in contact with. Secondly, doing some basic tests (e.g. weighing, gram stain) can establish a baseline snapshot of your budgies health which can be used later on for comparing future results.
