I don't have an answer, although I have had a bird treated for respiratory infection twice (same bird), the vet didn't recommend anything to do for prevention.
In what way are you being really careful. :) Is it prevention wise or just trying to pick it up sooner?
i have been looking out for signs. i think tail bobbing and sneezing are effects. i would be able to prevent it if i knew what the causes are! lol :)
my vet says it is really common in budgies so i thought better to be safe than sorry. i would really like to know the causes so i can prevent my budgies getting ill :)

Luke is always sneezing but so far (14 months) he is very healthy and happy. So I don't think sneezing is a sign of problem.

I believe that one of the factors that cause respiratory infections are drafts.
Budgies that are exposed to cold drafts from windows, doors, or any ventilation can become sick, just like we get colds.
Other factors that may lead to this disease is the air they breath. Budgies have very sensitive respiratory systems and are highly effected by anything in the air. That includes, perfumes, scents, smokes, and other air pollutants.
