Hello,

I got a new budgie afew months ago and she has been suffering for months now. she started vomiting/regurgitating alot. Stopped eating properly and very inactive. anythin she ate came out and she lost alot of weight: weighed 26g.

I have taken her to an avian vet in london - C J Hall. did all sorts of tests - blood tests, crop smears x-ray etc. x-rays showed her liver inflammed. Vet found traces of a fungal and bacterial infection. blood test found e-coli.
We started treating her with some antifungal and antibiotics. Initially this helped and she gained 4g taking her weight to 30g. got worse after 1 week. took her back and gave her stronger antibiotics. again improved for a week and she is now back to worse. she just sits there for the whole day.
Vomit sticks to her feathers and irritates her alot. Sh comes out in the eveining and sits next to a lamp. however, whenever she starts flying the vomiting becomes worse.

It really hurts me to see her this way!:(

Please help as i dont know what else to do!

I'm no expert at this stuff, but it looks as though you've done the right thing.
I hope she gets better soon. :)

You have done the right thing by consulting youre vet, but i would consider what quality of life youre little budgie has,no-one likes to see them suffer. Personally i would again seek the advice of a avian vet to discuss youre budgies health. She really shouldnt be left to continue like this. Please keep us up to date.

I agree with bluebird. As hard as it may be, if the avian vet can't find out what is wrong and help the poor little thing, I would consider having her put to sleep. It sounds like she is suffering. My thoughts are with you.

I am so sorry to hear that your little sweetie is not feeling well. It is certainly a stressful situation for the both of you. My thoughts are with you Shux.

Do you have the names of the medications your budgie is being given? I'd be interested in finding out.

I was thinking about this quite a bit and I was wondering if it was possible that your budgie has Trichomoniasis, which is a protozoan infection of the crop. The symptoms appear to match those of your budgie; vomiting and weight loss being the most prominent. Unfortunately, this can lead to eventual death (even when the bird appears to eat). Essentially, the crop becomes fluid filled. Treatment is by use of Emtryl but administering it requires extreme caution since an an overdose is toxic.

You mentioned your sweetie has E Coli that was found through a blood test. Is your little sweetie being given both oral and injected antibiotics? Giving those simultaneosly in severe cases is a good idea.

I don't know what to tell you shux, other than you are definitely doing the right thing by keeping her warm. I am SO happy to hear that you brought her to the vet though. Please keep us updated.

Hey guys!

I took tweety back to the vet. We are now treating her with flagyl (something like that) and some other stuff incase its a protozan infection.

Started last night and she is looking much better this morning. hopefully with God's grace she will recover!
