What type of lining or bedding do you use? Also can your bird get down onto the bedding/lining or does your cage have the wire cage bottom above what you put in the bedding tray?
I use corn cob bedding for birds and small animals and my cage has the cage bottom above the tray that holds the corn cob bedding.
Do you think I should leave the cage bottom in or let Pippin get down into the bedding? I never see him get down in the bottom of his cage now. He never walks along the bottom, he is always up on one of his perches.

I use newspaper and both my cages have grates.
I use either gravel or sand paper or just gravel. There are not grates.

I only use plain paper towel with a grate over it. It's only a matter of minutes that the paper towels becomes filthy again.

The problem with cage bedding is it’s a great source for bacteria to grow in. If there is a grate it will keep the bird(s) from picking off the bedding.
Now the other problem when using bedding is you can not see when there is a change in your bird’s poop. A change in the poop is an indicator of problems that need to be addressed quickly.
Daily changing the news paper or paper towels in the cage is the best thing for your birds.

I think I will most definatly keep the grate because it keeps the bird from walking in it's own poop, if he were to decide to go on the bottom of the cage.

There is a grate at the bottom of our cage and we don't put anything in the bottom of the plastic thing under it. I just take and old toothbrush and brush off all the poop and seeds into the garbage, then I rinse it off in the shower. It saves on money and paper can be messy when it gets wet if they spill the water.

i use sandshees
thats all (cheap and hygenic for the budgie) as they like sometimes to shape their beaks and its queit good for them to ache their feet.
I use newspaper with a grate.

I use newspaper, where feasible, I don't use the cage bottom, just the upper cage top sitting on top of the newspaper. One cage is bigger than a sheet of newspaper so it is a hassle, cage bottom or not. I fold up the side and ends to make a bit of a box.
