Sebastian has been gone many years now, but I thought it would be nice to remember him. My grandpa bought him for my eighth birthday. Grandpa was an animal lover, and he passed that down to me! I didn't know what to name my budgie at first, but my Mom helped me pick out the name of a composer since he seemed to like listening to me playing the piano. He was named after Johann Sebastian Bach :-) He was a beautiful dark turquoise color with a bright yellow face, and his markings were almost perfect. I don't often see budgies with the same coloring as him.
Sebastian was an amazing bird. Being so young, and with parents who had never had experience with budgies, he was never fully tamed, but he would sit on my finger in his cage. He loved to fly around the house once in a while. Our neighbors across the street had a pet Cockatiel that escaped, and my Mom, not knowing any better, thought maybe Sebastian could attract the cockatiel back home. We brought his cage outside for the first time ever. He was outside for a while when we decided it was no use. I picked up the cage, forgetting to hold the bottom, and the bottom fell off. Sebastian, who was probably spooked, flew out the bottom of the cage. I was devastated. We lived in the countryside, with very few trees, so I didn't know where he would go or if he would ever come back. The cockatiel never did. I was shocked when the next day our neighbor phoned to say she had seen "your blue thing" (she wasn't the nicest neighbor) eating in her bird feeder! We didn't see him there, but just having a sighting gave me hope. Later that day we saw him land on a piece of old printing equipment the neighbors had in their driveway. Sebastian was normally a skittish bird when he wasn't in his cage, but he must have wanted to come home because he didn't fly off when my grandpa approached him. Grandpa was able to throw a pillow case over Sebastian, and soon he was safe in his cage again. To me it was like a miracle - I didn't think I would see him again. There were plenty of hawks in the area, and even though it was summer, it got very cold at night. Sebastian's poops were runny for a couple days, but other than that he was absolutely fine.
Sebastian lived for several years after that. He finally succumbed to complications from scaly face, which looking back is very sad because if we only had the right medicine, he may have lived longer. By that time the pet shop had closed down, and we tried but couldn't find an avian vet. Thank goodness for the internet now! He did live for 7 years, so I'm happy he had a relatively long life. Remembering him is what inspired me to get the two babies I have now, and I know I'll be able to take good care of them with all the information available on the net.
RIP Bastian Bird :-) :budgie:
