View Full Version : My budgies - what are they?

Hi, my name is Annita. I actually am a registered Golden Retriever breeder so if any are from the 'dog world' too, they may have seen me around.

I also have many other varied pets including two Budgies. I have been browsing on this forum for quite some time and finally have joined up and would like some 'expert' opinions as to what my two budgies actually are.

Before anyone asks, I bred budgies in an aviary/colony situation when I was a teenager and know what budgie breeding entails. However, I never got into the genetics of it or learnt anything about colours.

These are my two - Charles (blue) and Lily (white)

I believe that Charles is a male and Lily a female, could someone please just confirm this for me (I am a little rusty on this score - and am not real sure about Lily) I do intend to breed these two when they are ready.

My question is, what do you all think these two are as far as colour goes? I have no idea what Charles is, and believe that Lily is not actually an albino. When I bought her (it was in a pet shop) they said she was not albino and had come from blue harlequin parents. If you look closely at her in the pictures you will notice very light grey 'barring' on her head, otherwise she has no colour whatsoever. Her eyes are sort of in between black and red (if that makes sense) and is confusing me as to what she really is!

And then from that, what does everyone think the possible offspring may be like?

Thanks for any help that anyone can give me and I look forward to getting to know you all.

By the way I have been looking at the baby budgies over the last few months and they are just gorgeous - everyone is doing a great job with their breeding. And seeing the pics of the babies makes me clucky! It is about 10 years since I had my aviary.

First of all welcome to the forum Annita! :D
It's great to have you here,

Both of your budgies are truely gorgeous.
You have got the the genders correct, now for mutations.

Charles would be a Yellow Face Type 2, and Lily going by the faint barrings I'm guessing she is a Dilute of some sort. Her mutaion is too tricky.

I don't know anything about the genetics of breeding so I can't help in that department. :o

I find it hard to know exactly what colour Lily's eyes are! They are not quite black, they sort of have a reddish glow to them.

And it is hard to get photos of these two as they are not quiet.

Anyway it's not really that important to know, I am just curious to know in advance what I may expect when they do breed. It doesn't really matter - as long as I get healthy bubs when the time comes!

lily is an albino (like mine) they are white budgies with red eyes. that is because they lack pigment cells. i read prevoiusly that their white feathers ''should'' reflect ome sort of bluish colour whne you look closely.

To determine a budgie's gender, you look at the lower beak. If the lower beak is brown, it's a female. If the lower beak is blue, it's a male! Hope I helped!:budge: :budgie:

sorry, this is off topic i know, but just had to correct this.

The lower beak has nothing to do with telling the gender of a budgie. If the cere is dark blue or dark purple, it is a male, and if the cere is light blue, white, tan, or brown it is a female.

Charles - yf2 cobalt male
Lily - albino female

The faint markings on Lily are pretty normal. Many albinos have faint markings or a pale blue tint to their feathers. These traits are fairly difficult to breed out of a bird. :)

I think that cattish_hottie got confused with "lower beak" and "cere" :) I tend to see that a lot of people mix up the two terms.

Beautiful budgies by the way! :D

hello and welcome to the forum
The first one is beautiful yellow face dark mauve male .
The second one IF the eyes are not red is whites delute.

Note: the Albino and lutino eyes are red because their bodies dont have the black color ( lemme say codes or genes) because of that the rays reflected from their eyes are the red of the blood that passes within the eyes , because of that they are seen red because there is no ( Colour ) is there.
