He is sleeping in his perch-swing which is high off the cage floor shal i move him down??
Or shall i rest him in a nest box full off wood shavings??

Was the vet an avian vet? I know that budgies can get their foot taped but it has to be done by a professional otherwise it could be taped wrong. I would leave him in his cage but put something soft like a towel or blanket on the floor of the cage so that if he falls he won't be hurt.

I fixed my cockatiels broken leg...its quiet easy.It took 3 weeks for it to heal.I put a cue pic (ear clearner) around his leg and put some padding on the inside.I then moved him to a cat carrier and he lived in there until he recovered. I put the food low and water and a perch taht was almost at the ground. Its good if you have pain killers It should help...but try something to support his leg?
hnm......I dont really know it worked with my cockatiel.

I still would want a vet to splint/tape the leg, if you were to tape it crooked it could affect your bird's ability to move around.

Not really Bea.I seen birds with only one leg and they could do everything a normal bird could even fly and land!He was a seagull.Bea do you know how much it cost to take a bird to the vet?Its really expensive more than a dog and you could fix taht yourself>:)

I don't care about the cost, i value my pets comfort and happiness more than money. So i would rather have a professional do the job than try to fluke it and hope for the best.

I agree with Bea. I would not risk my budgie over my pocketbook.

i also value my pets but im a student and to have it taped up will cost my around a couple of hundred pounds cant afford it so ive taken up the challenge to meand it myself was tricky at first but think ive done it right.............basically ive put a match stick behind its leg so that its straight and just lightly taped it he seems comfortable but ill give him maybe 4 weeks........just hope and pray.
Thanks for the advice guys and girls!!!

Well good luck, i only hope youre attempt to fix it does more good than harm :( i wish the budgie the best of health but please if he seems stressed try & arrange a visit to an avian vet.

You guys dont understand, somw people are not rich and some people dont have 200-300 dollars to spend on a 20 dollar bird!I could buy 30 budgies with that. I meen I do love my pets and animals but why would you spend taht much for a problem taht could just as well be done yourself.Take that post for example Bea and Amy:Rubbish Vet, get it the vet gave wrong advice......so If I were to spend that much money on my bird I would want correct advice...isnt it right?:o

The last budgie I had stopped using his leg all of a sudden one day. I thought it was broken at first, but it turned out from a vet x-ray that he had a tumor in his kidney. The nerve for a budgie's leg goes right through each of their kidneys. The vet told me that eventually the tumor got so big in Squirt's (my old budgie) left kidney that it pinched the nerve to his left leg and he couldn't use it anymore. He died a few weeks after his leg stopped working. I sincerely hope that this isn't what is wrong with your budgie! I'm worried because you don't know what happened to the leg. I hate to be the prophet of doom. The most important question to rule out kidney cancer is age. Budgies seem to be prone to cancer around the age of 4. Is he acting healthy otherwise? Good luck to you and your budgie!!

I am of the opinion that when you have a pet (budgies included), you are responsible for providing it with the care that it needs. Sometimes this care involves bringing them to a vet. If you can't afford the care for the pet, then maybe you shouldn't have it. Budgies are inexpensive to buy, which in some ways is unfortunate because it gives people a false sense about the true cost of budgie ownership.

I recommend having a budgie fund for vet care. All it takes is a small amount of money put aside each month (or however often you wish). Even $10 a month adds up over time. You just never know when you may need it.

Do you seriously think that when you think of the price of a budgies vet bills? :( If you do that's shocking, sure you could buy a new budgie but it wouldn't be your special pet. Even my aviary budgies go to the vet if they're looking a bit unwell, and they're not like friendly pets. My family isn't especially rich but if a pet needs vet care it gets it. You should consider vet bills before getting a pet of anykind. Now would be a great time to start a budgie fund. Just put aside a few dollars a week into a piggy bank or a bank account. Then if something happens you won't have a money problem cause you'll already be prepared. :D

He will not be sterssed he will be just fine!:) Hes alright he should recover within 3 weeks.:) I also like my pets but...when you can spare the money and fix problems yourself than why not.....take the (rubbish vet) post for example.Would you want that kind of information when you spent alot of money on your bird?I wouldnt...:S

people you have to understand that when you buy pets you might have been able to afford repairs or medicine at the time for the fellas but life is full of changes. eg i bought myself a car recently, with all the payments i cnt afford to keep sum money aside for the bird because i could probably use it for petrol. just because i brought myself a pair of budgies doesnt mean i never considered their health!! These things just happen but its what you can do to help.
He really does seem fine, he still flys around, eats well, sleeps well, gets preened by his girl friend and so im just going to wait. you guys are miss understanding joey he's not saying that budgies are cheap to buy just chuck out the old and buy a new one. he's trying to make you see it from our point of view that if we had that sort of money then we would have it repaired straight away!! but we dont which is why we take upon the challenge!!!
Thanks for the help!!

I recognize that what I am about to say may be unpopular, BUT, here I go anyway (I am truly passionate about this subject, so I apologize in advance if I offend anyone here......)

All I can really say is obviously everyone has different priorities. If you would rather put a priority other things, then that is fine, however, I would argue that getting your budgie appropriate medical care when needed is part of responsible budgie ownership. One would never treat a broken leg on a human the way it is being suggested to treat the broken leg on your budgie. Just something to think about....

I am not in any way criticizing anyone's love for their pet budgie, but I do feel that responsible budgie ownership includes things like vet care.

Im totally agree budgiekin, whatever pet anyone takes on at the end of the day it is down to the owner to provide the best medical/ vet care to their animals regardless of cost when the animal becomes ill.

I wish you luck in your attempt to help your budgie but I do agree that you should prepare for upcoming vet bills because you never know what might happen. My thoughts for a speedy recovery are with your budgie.

Guys you wont belive this!!!!!!

Exactly a month ago, my budgie Romeo had broken his foot and we didn't know how!
I had no idea on what to do and took him to the vet where they gave him some anti-biotics!!
They said they can either put him to sleep or carry out an operation that'll cost around £400-something I don't have!!
I came here seeking for help and it was Joey that gave me the confidence to mend Romeo's leg!
I decided to undertake the challenge and put a cast on his leg.
One month has gone and Romeo's foot has healed. I can not believe it!! Its actually healed!!!
Thanks joey!!!
:budgie: :budgie: :budgie: :budgie: :D
