so every day i offer my boy fresh fruits and veggies, and it all goes to waste. He doesn't even acknowledge it.. just jumps right to his bown of seed and chows down on that. I understand budgies can be very difficult to get to eat their fruits and veggies but i'm getting tired of the constant waste.
I've offered him : oranges, strawberries, parsley, dill, kale, apple/carrots(finely grated), celery leaves (he'll nibble them but won't actually eat it!), grapes, banana and the list goes on.
Anybody have any successful tricks to get their budgies to eat their fruits & veggies? I've tried putting the grated carrots over his seed, but he just nudged it aside and picked around it!
little bugger.he just won't leave his seed alone.

Well i just started on carrot for everyday for 2 weeks and after i put a mirror behind the food bowl everyone has orange moustaches :P Goodluck just stick with the one thing for a while, something simple like carrot or lettuce and let them realise its food not just something new in their cage that doesnt belong there!

I tried for about 6 months every day before Elwood finally decided to take a nibble!
I tried everything but it was such a waste i just stuck to little bits of grated carrot or a slice of apple and one day i caught him red handed nibbling away!
Good luck, be patient, it'll just take time :)
Pancho, I know how you feel, my Luke is the same, I have been trying for a year now still he wouldn't even get close to the veges or fruit.
The only time he will eat a tiny tiny bit of apple or pear is if I hand feel him. And when I say tiny I do mean a very tiny piece of fruit.

Our basic veg. is either brown rice, eggs or sweet potatoes. With one of these we mix
green peas, corn sweet pepper, broccoli and cauliflower chopped up. Try a combination of these and find out what he likes.

I have found that sprinkling seeds on top of grated carrots and chopped cooked (but cooled) broccoli helped a lot. Gracie was introduced to vegetables that way and now she doesn't need the seeds on them anymore. ;)

Mine have just recently started eating veggies- and now I can't get them to eat their seed. But what finally worked is I took their seed out for the 2 hours when they first woke up and 1 hour right before they went to bed and put a mixture of veggies in instead. I found putting a mixture in was helpful because, as it turns out, they dislike carrots and broccoli. They LOVE squash though. I usually put yellow squash, zucchini, green peas, carrot and broccoli (they some times pick at them, but those are those two are the only things left in the dish) in their bowl and they love it. Also, mine like their veggies a little better when they're blanched. but what can I say, my birds a kinda weird.
Good luck with the veggies!

Ugh, I know what you mean. Tery will have nothing to do with veggies or fruit. I've tried putting lettuce leaves, carrots and apples in his cage but he doesn't even pay attention and they go to waste.
What I'm going to try is when his seeds run low and he wants more, I'll pour out the rest of the seeds and husks and replace his seed bowl full of assorted veggies and fruits.
Maybe try that. I'm going to. Let us know if he starts eating his veggies.
Good luck! :)

stop trying so many mixtures. stick with one veg and one only.
never try substuting regular feed with what you want him to eat. he is more stubborn than you can imagine. budgies will literally starve themselves to death before eating what you force on them. (i know you didn't do this, but just incase you may be tempted, as i was many times)
fruit is not a great option for budgies. stay away from that for now. stick with veggies.
above all, never give up!
