Hi all!

I want to post a recipe for self-made budgie crackers. The ones you can get in shops often are made with sugar, and chemical, unhealthy ingredients. A very easy and cheap alternative is baking your own crackers – your budgies will love you for that!

What you need:

1 egg
80 gram meal (best would be wholemeal)
1-2 soupspoons honey
budgie seeds

Mix meal, egg and honey until you get a sticky stringy dough. Then add seeds as much as possible. The dough is only used as “glue”, so there should be as much seeds in it as possible.

Then make sticks or other forms (you can place wooden sticks or wodden clothespins in the dough) and put it into the oven. Bake it approx. 15 minutes with a temperature of 180°C (electric), and 150°C (air circulation).

You can offer one / two crackers per week. My budgies love them, and like them much more than the cracker you can buy (I placed one of mine and a bought one into their cage and watched them. They ignored the bought one completely after tasting both :D).

Have fun and good luck!

Yes, they are very dry and hard - the birdies have to work for their food, it´s a very good occupation for them.

Yesterday I made some, and my flock was delighted. :)

There's only one of my birds that doesn't love them, and he doesn't like millet either. He's very picky. But the other four just loved them, thank you for submitting this :)

Hi,
the ingredient means "flour", whole wheat flour is the best.
...and the spoon size refers to a "tablespoon".
The oven temperature in Fahrenheit should be 350, that is 180 in Celcius. That is for a regular oven, 300, if you are using a convection oven.

I hope this helps,

The homemade crackers sound interesting, would they be safe for hamsters and guinea pigs? I think they would like them too! Tina Marie
