Romeo is my new budgie! I have yet to add him to my siggy, but I will soon! Yes, I am getting a girlfriend named Juliet for him once he is fully tamed :). Romeo is the calmest budgie I've ever met, but he is definitely active and healthy! He was great on the car ride home from the petstore, only shuffling around 2 or 3 times. the employeee there said al the budgies there were hand fed (However, I've read about bird mills, so he could mean tube fed? Because those birds don't seem as tame as hand-fed ones.).

When we first brought him home he just at the bottom of the cage. Once I covered the cage for the night though he got a bit freaked out and climbed to the swing perch at the top of the cage.

He just sat on the perch all day. I played some budgies chirping on youtube and that made him chirp along with them. It was so cute! :D

Still sitting on the perch, I decided to take it out so he would go down and eat and drink. Of course, his wings were clipped awfully by the petstore so he can't get 2 inches off the ground. Because of this lack of knowledge, I had to take out the swing perch, lower the wooden perch so he could reach it, and place the seed and water bowls driectly on the ground. Today he FINALLY ate the millet, seed, and carrots that were in his seed cup. I assume(or at least hope) he drank some too. Btw, I have a water bottle and a water bowl so that I can transition him from the bowl to the bottle. (any ideas about how to do this btw?) He has now chirped a few times and seems much more comfortable.

Today I started slowly putting my hand in and resting it on the bottom of the cage. The first couple times he freaked and flew (fell) off the wooden perch. After a couple minutes he was fine though, even preeing himself once he saw my hand was fully in the cage and not moving towards him. So I took a piece of millet and held it in my fingertips and slowly moved toward him. I stopped when he started looking scared. I did this a couple times and each time I got about 3 inches from him. Can't wait to continue taming tomorrow!

I decided to sing to him today. The first song that came to mind was My Country Tis of Thee, since that what we have been singing in choir. So i slowly opened the cage door, but had to stop a couple times when he looked a bit tense. I eventually got my hand (with index finger extended) very close to him. He still looked content, so I very very gently touch his belly. He put one foot on the cage, as if about to climb away, so I moved my hand away. I continued singing to him and slowly took my hand out and closed the cage door.

I did the same thing, singing to him and slowly moving closer to his belly. Today I got very close several times, and once even got him to step up on my finger! Once he realized, though, he flew off and started flapping a bunch on the cage bottom. I kept singing softly and had my hand out of the cage and the door closed (but not locked, so it could be pushed open). I sang to him a couple more times after he calmed down before leaving the room. Then I finally got the internet working and want on here and read the comments :).

EDIT: I am not planning on giving him any more millet except for taming, I only put mllet in the seed cup today and yesterday to encourage him to eat.

It's really best to let your little Romeo have a full two weeks to adjust to his new surroundings before you even begin ;) to tame him.

In the meantime, just sit next to his cage and sing, talk or read to him but don't put your hand in the cage or try to coax him onto your hand at this point in time. :)

Once he's had the proper settling-in period, you will both be ready to move on to taming and training.

Looking forward to hearing lots more about handsome little Romeo and seeing many more pictures in the days to come.

He is a real cutie-pie!!

I really like all the different shades of blue that are available, and Romeo is one of the nicest. So pretty! Too bad the pet shop clipped his wings so short.

Really, two weeks? Everywhere I've read said 2 or 3 days, or until they seem more comfortable.

Two weeks is correct.

Please give Romeo that time to adjust.

Often you'll think a budgie is being "tamed" very quickly when in reality it is so submissive because initially they are terrified.

Lol, great timing:). I'm at my dads for 4 more days- and I'll have had Romeo for exactly 14 days by the time I go back to my mom's where Romeo is. Can't wait to start taming some more once he's ready!
