Hi All,
Just a few questions for you seasoned breeders. My budgies have been mating daily for the last 7-9 days. I have noticed that Selma is getting a lump (like a prego belly) down by her vent. She spends most of her time in the nestbox with Ray. when I looked in a few minutes ago, there was a small pool of liquid where hew vent had been. Not poop, but what is it????? There have also been some rust coloured spots occasionally over the last day or so.
Any ideas????

what do you mean do you mean her feathers by her vent were dirty?

Sorry,
No the nestbox has had some rust coloured spots. Also, this evening I finally got a look at her vent, and it is rust coloured (blood?) as well.

has she looked like she needs to lay and does it look like she is under any stress because budgies can even become egg bound like any other bird this is when the egg wont come out of the vent this can be caused by cold climates or not enough humidity keep an eye on her i might not be rite tho if you see that things getting worse my sudgestion is to make an appointment with an avian vet how is she doing now is she spending lots of time in the nest box? are her feathers fluffed up,has she been active, has she been eating drinking sorry for all the questions but you want to make sure that she isnt sick keep us updated.

Hmmmm. This does not sound good at all. Rust coloured spots probably indicate blood and this is not normal for a budgie. She needs to be seen by an avian vet as soon as possible. If you need to find one, you can look here:

Nothing about her has changed other than these strange spots. Could they possibly be from a red coloured mineral block? I know I got the dye all over my hands when putting it in the cage. She is still active and eating, and playing with Ray. She still happily sits on the perch chattering away.

it might be from the mineral block but still keep an eye on her

She is still pooping too! Other than the colour, she appears to be fine, as if nothing has changed. Could she be picking at her vent on her own?
I would take her to the vet, if she's bleeding at all that's not good and should be checked out. If she's been swollen around then vent for several days she could have had a rupture, i don't entirely understand exactly what they do but you shouldn't breed a hen with a rupture. I only know about them cause a hen i used to have had one. How old is your hen?

She is about 2 years old. I noticed this morning that she has pulled the feathers out from around her vent, not alot, but enough that I can see her skin.

thats is not good at all you should get her checked out.
Take her to a vet ASAP, this sounds serious.

Okay,
So I spoke to a vet today, and they believe that the red is from her mineral block and that it is coming from her mouth and not her vent. She has been plucking her feathers around her vent and that is why they too would be rust coloured. She is eating, chirping and pooping, so all seems well. They believe that she has an egg in there and that it should arrive shortly. Thanks for everyone's help.
