ok, i finally gave up on zero + beaky + took them to get their wings clipped in the hopes that this would make them tamer, well getting there was quite amusing, they were in separate cardboard boxes + were constantly chirpping at each other! the vet sed he would leave the outside wing feathers on so he looks nice + i was like actually i'd prefer my babies to be comfortable than look good so please dont leave them. he did zero first, but after the first wing someone came in to talk to him so he popped zero back in his box, when the person had gone he moved onto beaky so i sed what about zeros other wing + he sed oh u never do both of them, the point of clipping them is so they go round in circles + fall down to the ground      how is that right??? so i told him he was wrong + in my best 'if u dont do what i tell u i'll wallop u round the head with a big stick' voice, i told him that whatever he thought i woud like both of their wings clipped thank u very much, so he did :) but im very annoyed with him + wont be going back there, thats streatham hill vets if anyones interested. grrr. anyway beaky + zero dont seem to bothered + seem to be settling well into their new wings, they've had a bit of a snuggle + regurgitating session to comfort each other. well sorry for my ranting, but just thought i should tell someone before my brain exploded!!

 You have got to be kidding!! When I read your post, my jaw just dropped open! I couldn't believe what I was reading! Holy smokes! I'm glad you weren't too shy to say anything to him about wanting both wings clipped! Wowy.

If you need to find another vet, which it certainly sounds like you do, you can look one up here:

yeah i did have look on there but there are none in london :( the easiest one to get to would be about an hours drive from my parents house, i dont have a car in london, so its pretty impossible to get anywhere outside without taking hours, there is a vet near my parents house thats not at bird specialist but he was really good last time i took zero so i think i'll stick to them in future. i thought this one was going to be alright tho cos my housemate had to take her budgie in to sort out some mites + everything was fine!! weeeird!! ah well at least i know now + can warn people :)

ooh + the taming is actually going quite well already, zero sat on my shoulder for a while, which it was impossible to do before!! beaky is still a little biting machine, but i can work on her!! i bought them lots of new toys to make up for the scaryness too!!

You should be proud you sound like a great budgie owner:)Sorry about your bad trip to the vet ...never heard of clipping one wing that's cruel.

Yeah it is acctually it could get them killed, because they have no contol with only one wing and they acn fly into the wall or the floor and break a body part...like the neck, wing, foot or even ribs.

I doubt that but he would not be a vet anymore

It's not true that one wing clipped is super dangerous. No more than a fully flighted bird anyway. It's just less comfortable and awkward for the budgie. You did good standing up to the vet like that!

hee hee nice smileys!! but i dont have my car at the mo + i dont drink coke, but apart from that its a good plan!! i spoke to my mum about reporting him to someone but she reckons it wont do a lot, i mean if he's a proper vet people are probably gonna listen to him more than me, its a shame, but thats the way the world works i suppose! thanks for being so nice + reading my ranting everyone!! i think the mad budgie tamingis going quite well now so i think it was worth it + at least now i know that if i have a real problem i should go somewhere else. :) :budgie:

The funny thing is the clip he was going to give your budgies wouldn't have stopped them flying at all. It may have made life harder for them as they wouldn't be able to steer properly. :P The outer flight feathers give lift, the inner give control. So when people leave the outer feathers for 'appearance' they are actually just wasting their time. ;)

I have a budgie that only one wing grew back because he keeps breaking the other side`s feathers and they do fly in a circle but after a bit they learn to simply fly alkwad. by alkward I mean they fly in a strait line with no control on a downward angle that won`t hurt them but they will hit things. Mine flew all the way across the living room(from very high up on my stairs) and into the T.V. (it wasen`t on). just less than 1 metre down for every 5 forward

I went to see the local vet where I live to inquire about wing clipping. If you think your vet was bad, have I got you beat!!!!
He (the vet) said he would happily clip my budgie's (and cockatiels) wings for me. when I asked about price, he told me it would about $50 per bird!!!!!!! I asked why on earth he charges that much, and this is what he told me:
'Well, first I would need to fully sedate your birds (with GENERAL ANAESTHETIC!), and then I would be able to clip them. You cannot clip a birds feathers with them awake, it is cruel.'
Can you imagine that????
I had always taken my pets there and was happy, but then he told me that about the birds, well I almost ran screaming out the door! Now I go to a really nice pet store where they do it quickly, neatly, nicely, and cheaply!

     omg thats insane!! its even crueller to anaesthetise them surely? well done for running!!

Holy smokes!!! It would be WAY WAY WAY riskier to sedate your budgie with anaesthetic! The risks with sedation should never be taken lightly!!!! Many budgies (and other birds for that matter) do not react well to the anaesthetic. I can't believe this!!!

Amy

What a stupid person! If when I go into vet training anyone tells me anything like that, I'll go mad! How cruel is that?

Budgies sometimes don't even recover from anesthetics, I'm glad you went away! And the price, phew!

I'm glad you found a good place to have it done.

I had a vet who wouldnt even treat budgies. I found a great vet who was better with my dog and great with parakeets.

Amy
05-14-2006, 10:24 AM
Why wouldn't they treat them?

Boy, I'm in the wrong business. $50.00 to clip wings!? I could put out discount fliers and do it for $49.99 and make a killing. :)

My pet shop clips free of charge.

I have no idea. Everyone around here complains about that vet. He said one of my friends dogs might die from a surgery he recently had and of course when they went for a second opinion the vet said he was going to be fine. Not to mention, he is just rude most of the time.

Amy

Don't use that vet then! Lol.
