Okay, this is a lot of work for a stupid little treat, but don't laugh. My birdie decided to be grumpy, and had been having a bad few days. (Oh woe!) He was all biting, and I decided to give cheering him up a try. I looked around for supplies to make a treat. I found an unused calcium block, seeds, Cheerios, spoons, a popsicle stick, and water. I decided to improvise. I ground up the calcium block to powder, and began to experiment. I added water and got a calcium paste. First, I put some on the spoon, added seeds for an incentive, and set it aside. Then I rolled the Cheerios in the paste, and I set them aside. I dipped the popsicle stick in the paste and dipped it in seeds. I let them all dry.

A couple days later, Ollie was still grumpy. I checked on the calcium treats, and the paste had gone hard, but tender enough for a Budgie to chew. I offered him the spoon with the seeds imbedded in the calcium, and he attacked it with gusto. He cheered up quickly. He also liked the Cheerios, which make great single serve rewards. The stuff fell off the popsicle stick. So here is the story. Below are instructions to make the treats.

Spoonful Of Fun

Supplies:

Plastic Spoon
Favorite Seeds Such As Millet
Other Favorite Small Treat
Calcium Block (Colored Blocks Make It More Inviting and Are Easier To Crush)
Clean Object To Use To Smash! (Oh So Destructive!!)

Steps:

1. Put Calcium Block In Bowl. (Sturdy Bowl!)

2. Crush Block To Fine Powder.

3. Add Water To Make A Paste. The Paste Shouldn't Be Super Runny But Shouldn't Be Clumpy Overly Thick. Use Your Own Judgement.

4. Put Some Paste In A Spoon. It Should Be Close To The Rim. Once Again, Use Your Own Judgement.

5. Add Pinch Of Their Favorite Seeds Or A Couple Of Treats.

6. Once Satisfied, Let Dry Without Being Disturbed For A Couple Of Days.

7. Once Dry And Firm, Serve For Fun! Your Budgie Will Either Love Digging For The Seeds Or Hate It! If They Dig For Seeds, They Get Calcium In The Process.

Munchy Crunchy Healthy Cheerios

Supplies:

Cheerios (Plain, Good Ol' Regular Kind)
Calcium Block (Colored Blocks Make It More Inviting and Are Easier To Crush)
Clean Object To Use To Smash! (Oh So Destructive!!)

Steps:

1. Follow Above Steps 1-3 To Make Paste.

2. Roll Or Dip Cheerios In Paste.

3. Set Aside And Let Dry For A Day Or Until Dry.

4. Serve By Hand For Some Fun Rewards!

Hope You And Your Birds Enjoy!

I just thought I'd share my Budgie's one and only favorite treat with the world. It is the only kind he will eat, my finicky little Guy. But He is worth it. I go to the trouble because I love him and can't stand him to be unhappy.

Hmmm. Also, tell me how it goes if you try it. I always offer mine by hand. It makes him associate my hand with good.

Sure I'll let you know how it goes.
I have a mineral treat that my birds aren't interested in right now, so maybe if I change it up that might do the trick.
One thing can it be put into a mold?

I don't have cheerios so the munchy crunchy healthy cheerios have to wait.

-grin- I don't think it would hurt. Just make sure it is thick or it will crumble.

The cheerios coated in coloured mineral block paste would look like a budgie version of fruit loops!! How exciting.

They do! I used orange, but next time I'm at PetSmart I'm going to get different colors as well. They aren't so expensive, and it makes a lot of Cheerios.

I tried making some this morning.
All I can say is it was messy I don't know if it was suppose to, but everything turns out messy for me. :p
I found the blender easier to make it to powder.

Also, Is this what it's suppose to look like?

I would think that those candy making molds would work well. Probably the silicone type so you don't have to coat it with anything.

I don't know. Mine was messy, but I only got so far before I ran out of powder.
