View Full Version : How Can I get Them To Breed!
Its been 2 days since I bought my little girl budgie "Crystal". My male is making mating sounds all day long she dosent seem interested, they have a nest box,a large cage, cutlle bone,Vitamins and minerals in thier water food, veggies and friuts what else could I do.:S
First of all, the new girl should have been quarantined in a seperate room of the house for at *least* 30 days. Quarantine is extremely important. Also, do you only have a single pair of budgies? If so, what are your reasons for breeding. You will find the costs of breeding greater than any income you may get from selling the babies. Are you even planning on selling the babies? Are both budgies over 1 year old (preferably 1.5 years)? The female could be too young or she could be unwell which would be why she's not showing interest in breeding. Also, if you've only had her two days she'd still be settling in. She's only known the male 2 days anyway, they need time to bond.
She is fine Bea I spent 2 hours choosing her.I watched her until she even pooped and it looked fine she is active, making noise,fliying,chirping.....eating and drinking too.I am going to keep all the young ones I want more budgies. You see I had been breeding a pair for 2 years The female died last month and the male flew away yesterday....so I decided that I was going to start again but its so frustrating. The male is 2 years old and the female looks to be 6 - 7 months old,by the time they get to know each other and and pair up she will be old enough to breed.I know she is too young yet but she will age.
Well if she's only that age you should remove the nest box *until* she is over a year old. Then put the box back in. It's irresponsible to even encourage breeding at such a young age, there are so many more complications as she is neither physically or emotionally developed to breed.

Maybe leave them alone and just wait it out.

It does a bit, especially when refering to budgies. But put it this way. A human girl's body may be able to have a baby when she's anywhere from 12+ but that doesn't mean that she'd be able to deal with the stress of raising a child. It's the same with budgies. A six month old budgie might be able to mate, lay and hatch eggs but often the babies are small and under-developed as the hen doesn't know what to do with them and leaves them to die. At such a young age the hen's bones aren't strong enough for egg laying either and becoming egg bound is way more common in young hens than mature ones.
Actually, it's more like 11+, lol.

no 12 sometimes really you shouldn't push breeding on any female budgie it can warrent her death if she is not healthy...let me add she knows when the time is rite:)
