This whole time i was worried trisket had mites and now i don't think she does, but i just noticed this morning that dewey has a little tiny patch of roughness in the top left corner of her beak just against the edge of her cere :( is there any chance it could be somthing else?! I've already seperated her... what do you guys think? :S

Could it, perhaps, be SCALEY FACE? From time to time, I've had an outbreak of it with some of my birds. If not treated, it can spread rather rapidly. If it is, get some SCALEX. Easy to use and most effective.
Hope it isn't anything serious. Keep us posted.

Scaly Face is a crusty infection that spreads around the beak,it spreads to the cere, around the eyes, feet and legs.It is caused by a small organism but can be easily treated by creams. Its very contagious.
you can also get feather mites, but the budgies preening will generally get rid of them.
You can also get Red Mites ,they hide in small gaps in the cage & on the bottom.they come out at night & attack the budgie.there almost invisable.you can get special powder to get rid of them on the bird & the whole cage will have to be cleaned top to bottom.
hope this helps.

so scaley face is caused by a form of beak specific mites then? right? I'm so confused :S LOL. ah well, I made an appointment for dewey, she goes in tomorrow at 9:30 am *fingers crossed*.
for those of you who have had birds with scaly mites, afterwards is there are risk of them being in the cage? do I have to disinfect everything?!
I think you do have to disinfect everything. I hope she's alright....

well i just got home from the vets... and i was right, dewey has beak mites. He gave her a shot and she has to get one more in 2 weeks. He said that i did a great of catching it so early, and so it will definatley be cleared up within the two shots :) He also said that he doesn't think my other birds have caught it (aparently this kind is usually only passed from parent to baby or between mating pairs) but just to be sure I should keep her seperated untill 48 hours after the second shot and wash all the cages and playgyms well.
so thats the scoop :) thanks for all your help and concern! I think we're all going to be ok afterall :D

Moby Our Budgie has caught a cold and is a bit fluffy. a couple of times years ago i took other budgies to the vet where they died after the second injection and seem to respond well after the first one. Do you have any advice on another treatment or is the vet the best alternative. i apreciate any advice on offer.
Yours gratefully Anna
Oh dear, Budgiekin might be able to help you.

oh no!!! your budgie died at the vet!!!??? was it an avian vet or just a regular one? cause i never trust the regular ones with my birds, i've heard to many horror stories :( . if that was the case here, i would try to find an avian vet near you (budgiekin has a website to help you with that) and take him/her there. if the killer one WAS an avian vet, did they say why it happened? was it definatley they're fault? this is scary and i'm sure its hard to trust a vet again, but in my opinion the people who went to school for 9 years to study the insides of birds definatley have the upper hand and our birds have a much better chance of surviving with their help :) even if you have to search out a whole new vet, its worth it. good luck and keep us updated :)
ps- if you post this question in a new thread you will proabably get alot more answers

I am so sorry to hear about your sick little Moby. It is never easy to deal with an ill little guy.
Unfortunately, when budgies are visibly ill, they are often quite sick and the prognosis is not always a good one. Budgies are excellent at hiding the early stages of illness, but become much less able to do so when the illness has progressed.
Your best bet is to bring Moby to an avian qualified vet. If you need to find one in your area, you can look them up at this site:

Good luck with your little sweetie. In the meantime, keep Moby warm and please let us know how the little guy is doing.
