View Full Version : Teaching your budgie to talk
I have taught a budgie to talk before so here are a few tips:
* Choose a young bird.
* Males are generally better talkers than females.
* Keep him on his own.
* Ladies voices are higher pitched so the bird will have less trouble mimicking the sound.
* Choose an easy first word, like the bird's name. eg. Bobby.
* Repeat the word more each day saying it in the same pitch.
* After about a month, the bird might start saying the word whilst chirping, don't expect it to be clear though.
* When your bird has no trouble saying the word you are ready for another one.
* When your bird becomes chatty teach him sentences.
* You will not have to repeat the words so much now and your bird might start saying anything he hears!
* Your bird might get muddled up and come out with nonsense. eg. tea on the roof ELEPHANT Joey hello!
Have fun and post if you get your budgie talking!
Those are some good tips. I'm going to move this to the Budgie Articles forum. :)
Very good tips!! :D I'll also add that males generally make better speakers but females can still sometimes talk. It's also easier to teach a tame budgie to talk because they seem to pick up words faster if you talk to them lip to beak or as close as you can get.:)

Thanks for the tips! I have been repeating "Hello" and "Kiki" to Kiki since I got her back in November. I have been thinking that she has been trying to say "hello" for a couple days now but she said it clearly once today! :D

Hold the phone here! You can teach your budgie how to actually TALK? :confused1: Like a parrot, or some secret budgie language? No, seriously. You can teach your budgie to talk? Tell me how! Tell me how! (Please) :p
Yeah, budgies are fantastic talkers if you put the time in. They can even be taught full sentences or parts of songs. :D
Well they don't exaclty 'Talk' they just mimic sounds, like parrots.
And yes it is possible you just have to be patient.
Hopefully soon you'll be teaching Pickle to talk!
Use my step by step guide, up the top, to teach him!

when it was just trisket and I, she used to wistle and also make kiss noises at me :D haha. and she was only about 8 months when she started! but since I got keico for her she hasn't really bothered to try that anymore. she's still amazingly affectionate she just doesn't feel the need to try and communicate verbally anymore. At first I was sad, but then I realized that I'd rather have a happy bird who doesn't talk english, than one who is so lonley that it trys despratley to communicate with me... I would feel way to bad now that I know how much happier they are with a friend. instead I try to do budgie talk hahaha! they love it when I try!

Right! So lets recap: Repitition and giving treats right after, for about 20 minutes each time.
Haya everyone. Great tips. Also i would like to point out every well almost every budgie can learn to talk. More commen in the males but that all can learn. Yes its better to start of with them you i know. Im trying to get sonic my male to say pretty boy. Im pretty sure i heard him chirp it a few times but noting more. One of my friends budgies can say come here but it sound like come ere. Hello pretty boy in a few different ways like pretty boy hello. She recenly lost her female and now jake ( the male) has started to rip at his wing feathers. She is thinking about gettime he another cage mate. He still says all thouse would even after his cage mate died.

LOL i just had to say that this was a very entertaining rant to read between you three hahaha ;)
Today i got a Feathered Phonics CD (a prize i won) in the mail. It's supposed to teach your parrot how to talk, i was listening to the tracks, so funny!! It's a slow sounding voice saying different things. Dunno if it'll work but it's sure amused me!

my ex bird which had passed 3 years ago had an intresting way of learning words, when I begin to repeat a word, he was slowly getting closer and closer to my mouth and was putting his head onto my lip, stayed there for like 10 or 15 minutes, and after that he used to fly away and began to say the word about 1 or 2 hours later. He knew a lot of words, talking clear and fluent.
Also I borrowed some nightingale sound cassettes from my uncle and played them, my bird tried to imitate the sounds and learned to sing like a nightingale quickly :)

The reason for this is because the bird neeeds to ffel the vibration of the word to tunr thier voice box so to say, so they can mimic the word.
OK guys for you unbelievers that budgies arnt as good a african grey parrets. There have been lots of budgies trainedto speak in context and learn over 1000 words. here is one link of victer the talking budgie, that actualy understood what you wher saying.
http://www.parrotresearch.com/
in one of the audio clips, his owner calls him a lier for him saying that his girlfriend wanted some millet, then victor the budgie got angry and called him a unbeliever and that he was telling the truth. VICTOR EVEN TRANSLATED HIS GIRLFRIENDS SPEECH SO HIS OWNER COULD UNDERSTAND HIM. tuely amazing

omg, i jsut looked at the video and victor is actualy trying to teach his girlfiend to speak, and when she does nto lsiten he gbets angry and yells at her,
this is why i have started to train my budgie 3-4 times a day for 20 minutes each, i will let you in on how it works out.
Great information, everybody! That's why I like this site so much!!

How long did it take for you to teach your budgie to speak? What was the shortest amount of time from teaching, to budgie talking? Just wondering around how fast these little guys can learn? My Sky Blue is a baby, and I would really love for him to say something, even whistle would be great. I have been working with him a lot. Every time I walk by his cage, I will stand there for a while and just talk to him, I repeat "Pretty Birdie" then whistle, over and over again, three or four times a day.
Are there any signs to look for, to know wether or not your budgie is listening to you, learning, or when they are actually trying to repeat what you said? Thank you for this post, and thanks for all replies. Angel.
Bobby took about a month to say hello, and a further week to say Bobby. Sadly I didn't get a chance to teach him more because of the bad incident that happened.

It can take as little as a week. But if you want fast results, please do not wistle. It teaches them that your words are meaningless and you are actualy teaching them to wistle. Talk in a high pitch voice (girls are best), repeat the word over and over again. Make sure they are one or two syliable words. Do this 3-4 tiems a day for twenty-thirty minuts each, reward your birds after every every lesson.
My articcle is commig n soon

This is very very true my dear! My Coco (female) was talking in 4 months. She said "pretty pretty bird" as she just loved looking at herself in the mirror all the time.:) Then I started calling her my "baby" then she started saying "pretty pretty baby". She'd say them both together and sometimes get mixed up with what she was saying...it was hilarious. lol It sounded soooooo cute, and believe me, it put a big smile on my face.:D
P.S. My friend's budgie, Robby, use to tell her to "shut-up" everytime she'd talk on the phone. Obviously wanted her FULL attention. :)

My 5th Budgie is still in quarantine and I haven't had much time to work with him yet. (Due to my Son having shoulder surgery this past week.) I have, however, tried to spend time with my 4th Budgie, Scooter, (as far as teaching her to talk) and she seems really close to saying some words. She keeps tipping her head sideways and gets real close to my mouth, and studies my face, when I talk to her. I have even seen her throat moving up and down, which makes me wonder if she's trying to figure out how to form words to talk. I am going to keep working with her everyday because I feel like I am close to getting results.
I am trying to teach Scooter to say, "I Love You, Pretty Bird, and Kisses." She does by the way, give me kisses and even preens my face, eyebrows, and hair. It's soooooo cool and I love the feeling, ha! :D
Yesterday afternoon, I laid down on the couch with Scooter and she snuggled on my stomach under a blanket. I made sure that I laid real still and never slept sound enough that I would roll over and hurt her in any way. I just dozed and she did too. It was a riot and a melting experience. :o

Has anyone had success with training a budgie to talk when he's living with another budgie? Cuddles is finger trained and loves to come out and play by himself, so I've been trying to teach him how to say "pretty birdy" for a few months now. He's gotten to the point that he knows it's me when I say it. If he's across the room and I say it, he will fly over to me. Carmine comes out to play, but is not finger trained, so I don't know if it will work out in the end if only one will catch on. Anyone got any tips? I don't want to seperate them. They are flock animals and I don't think it's right to leave them alone.
I suppose It is possible, but I think you'll have to do it more regularly than what you do with 1. :)
