Stumpy & Popeye

Well, I knew this was coming when I saw them mate, Stumpy dropped an egg today. When she did this last spring, she laid eggs until I pulled her from the avairy and let her keep them. I am worried she will do this again now.

I am thinking i might bring the pair in & let her sit on 1 or 2 eggs, and replace the rest???

Nope, not an age thing. They are both about 2 1/2, she is a fantastic mom, we'll see what kind of dad he will be! I just dont want to over stuff the aviary. I lost Sylvester, so I can replace him with a baby, so thats why im thinking of letting her keep 2 eggs, she had 4 last spring and 3 hatched. (knowing me, i'll let her keep all the eggs hehehehe)

I talked to mr b last night, and he gave me the ok to bring them in. I will get a new nest box today.

yup, hence the name stumpy! lol
we think it was broken as a baby. shes never had a problem with a chick so we dont beleive its a genetic thing.

Ok, they were both pulled from the aviary last night and are now in a flight cage. We had problems adding the nesting box, i got one that goes on the outside, instead of the inside. BUT one door was too low & I wouldnt be able to clean the cage, and the other door was too big, and the bird would have flow away, to be dinner to the cats! So hubby is modifying it and hot glued some wood to cover the openings. so its airing out since last night and will be added tonight. He also modified the box so the back opens for easy peeking & picture taking!

Stumpy was very happy to be in the cage, shes a pro at it. Popeye did very well too. The were both eating and chatting away this morning. I think when i put the box in tonight (which will be inside, since hubby is a "measure once, cut 10 times kind of handyman!) she will hop right in.

I think 2-3 weeks old is the ideal time to pull the babies. Too early and you'll be having to get up constantly during the night, but too late and they won't take to the rearing mix.

I think at about 2.5 - 3 weeks if you do the last feed about 11pm and the first about 7am there's no night feeds. It's important to let their crop empty once a day anyway.

thanks bea. i got to bed at 10, so that will be their last feeding, but i'm up at 4, so they should be able to adjust to my schedule.

I came home to broken egg#2. I was HOPING it would have had a softer landing, and i could save it and add it to the box tonight, but no such luck, it had a crack.

Anyway, we will add the box after kates karate class, and let the fun begin! lol

Lay down a towel tomorrow and it will give your egg a softer landing. You can wash it later lol. Remove the bedding, she might not like it, add it in after. They're both so cute.

YF 2 is debatable. In these photos she looks YF2 but in photos you posted elsewhere she just looks likes a green budgie clearflight pied for sure, but just normal green. Which photos show her correct colours ?

she's an old pro, she's bruces mom (different dad, so no more bruces!) she laid 1 egg in the aviary and 1 again today, so thursday i expect on in the nesting box

I'm thinking maybe 1 more egg on sat. I'd be surprised if the did more than that, since it would actually be egg 6.
It amaized me how quickly she incubated comapired to last time (cold winter compaired to hot hot summer!) she was on egg 1 as soon as it hatched!
shes a very broody gal, after the last clutch fledged, she was attacking them and claiming the box as hers, she wanted more eggs, so back to the aviary she went! lol

I candled them again, and really did get to see the little bubs well in 2 of the eggs!!! I also have great news! NO EGG 7 thank goodness!
I took more pics, but dont know how they turned out, its really hard, i think i need to find a better setting, but mom was getting mad at me! the camera is in the charger now so i will get them off later today or tomorrow night (at the track tomorrow)

vanny, the candler i have is a long probe type thing that bends so you can have the light go under the egg without touching it. at the end is a really bright light. i'll take a pic when i get the carmera charged.

2/28 update, all are looking good, eating well, getting nice & big!

I didnt take them out of the box yesterday, but will tonight. Its time for a box cleaning, so i will get updated pics. We should be able to get a better idea of Emmy and Opals coloring. I hope to see another pied spot on one of them. Little Saffy is growing well, not SO tiny compaired to the others!

ok, i took pics last night and gave the babies a good check up. Cleaned poo of the feet etc. AND we already know that bub #2 ruby is a pied like mom, well, bub #4 Opal is too! Still to early to see what #5 will be, but pics will be posted tonight!

I am soooo nervous bea!!!! I made a new brooder, and thats all ready, and I have the HR mix. Karen (you know her) told me I can also add pureed veggies to it. I have syringes and the bulb ones too. I am planning on taking the 3 oldest to start with, and i will leave the last 2 with mom & dad, then take them later. I was getting pretty annoyed when I posted elsewhere for actual hands on advice, and got pretty crud advice! (you might have seen!) but I THINK I can handle it. I am just about as nervous as the first time I bred! I will start saturday night/sunday morning and see how it goes, then they will be with me at work all week!

Well, i cleaned out the box last night, and just as i suspected with mom not leaving the box again,and awfully big poos again, there were 2 new eggs!!! grrr
I candled them and they were clear so i replaced them with fake ones.

Pearl, Ruby, & Emmy are totally out of the box, Opal is about 1/2 way out, and baby Saffy keeps mom company in the box! lol

Just went through this entire thread..WOW!!! I loved every photo, the babies are amazing! It had to be an exciting fun time, watching each one develope. Wish you lived closer, I'd love to buy one of your beautiful well cared for babies sometime. I especially liked that you put the date on the photos... Some threads can be very old, but if it's the first time you've read it, you don't know if it's current or not. Thank you for the time line.

well, ruby and saffy have moved into a new cage, and not much longer the others will go into the aviary. They are eating by themselves now and are becoming very independent.

mom has now laid 4 eggs all clear (yay!) i'll give her a couple of weeks and put her back in the aviary too.
