well this is Yoshi

i brought him on Sunday the 11th of July from a nursery which sells plants and some birds. He was in the baby cage and i brought him home along with the only cage for sale there. According to members here he is around 1 year old. He had never been handled (apart from being grabbed and stuffed in a box) and lived in a cage to small for the amount of budgies in it.

Day 1, Sunday: Today after a while settling in i sat next to him and talked to him. Later in the evening i put my hand in the cage for him to get used to.

Day 2, Monday: I put my hand in the cage, talked to him and turned on some music. He occasionally chirped to the music. It appears hes slightly more used to my hand now.

Day 3, Tuesday: Pretty much tuesday except i tried some perch training (trying to get him to step up onto the perch). I understand it was rushed :o and feel bad about making him feel scared :(.

Day 4, Wednesday: More hand in the cage and hand feating with a seed block. He seems to be making progress.

Day 5, Thursday: Have been hand feeding him. He will now eat seed block from my hand and made contact with my fingers while eating (for a distance estimate when he took pecks he was never more than a cm or 2 from a finger). He also ate from it while i wiggled my finger around. He was a bit scared at first but realized it wasn't hurting him and continued to eat.
I have attempted step up training. He appears to have a sore foot though so i think that could be affecting it. I a sometimes able to touch him gently above the legs with the side of my finger. He will reach down and sort of peck/bite my fingernail (it's not a hard peck it's rather gentle) than he will sidestep away. after a short attempt i feed him seed block and give him some praise. It also seems like he might be trying to mimic my squinting. he also appears to open and shut his mouth like hes eating sometimes when he is not. Also is it normal to get a fluffed up feather on his head?

Usuallly it is best to give them a few day to a week to settle in. You may want to back off, let him get used to his new home.

so i should just continue feeding him the seed block, no more step up training?
i have to go back to school soon and unfortunately will not be able to spend as much time with him. I've been trying to get him comfortable with my presence while im on school holidays.

today he got his first fly out of his cage.
i took him to my room and removed his favorite perch which he came out on.

he did some laps and landed on the perch when i held it out. He landed and sat around for 20 seconds than did another lap and landed back on the perch. after a few more laps i put the perch back into the cage and he stayed on it and went back in.

14th of august, been over a month now.

He's sitting on my shoulder as i type this. He wil step up onto his stick outside the cage and only will step onto my finger from the stick. I can get him to step from finger to finger. I can put him on my shoulder but only after handling him for a few minutes. Wont often land on me, occasionally on my arm or finger.

let me scratch his neck last week. (going through a molt). Wont let me do it again. He sort of taps my finger with his beak, moves and flys of if i try.
