Hello.
I have a parakket named cadman and he is almost 2 years old. He is great very friendly and sweet but ever since we brought him a new companion his overall activityhas decreased and from 3 months to today he has started feeling cold. I live in florida and the wather here is not that cold at all. Also, I have noticed that he is always tired and often falls asleep when he finds somewhere comfortable. I have tried giving him food for stressful but to no avail, so I have decided to separate him for the other budgy. What do you think it could be?

Hmm, tricky, take him to an avian vet and get him checked out, tell us how he is!

Is you don't know where to find one near you, look here:
www.aav.org/vet-lookup (http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup).

What makes you say she's cold? Is she always sitting fluffed up? It sounds like she could be ill in which case you should get her to an avian vet. I would take her anyway as a change in behaviour could mean something serious.

Well now it seems he is much worst he can barely stand up. I read somewhere that for now is best to keep him warm and make sure he is eating..., He was eating when I last left this afternoon. I never knew he was this sick:(

Yep, you definitely need to get him to a vet.

Thanks everyone for your help but my budgy cadman just died. I know that going to the vet was the best idea but he just got serious today. I have looked online as to maybe what he had was curable to no avail... I really tried to give him as much love affection as i could, but oh well I guess this type of things happen when you're raising small fragile little birds.

Oh no, that's terrible, oh that's awful.

Well thanks again to everyone. I have decided that i will give it another try when I make a bank account fund for another emergency like this, I still have another budgy that is over 6 years old but she is as hard as nails, but doesn't like people at all, not matter what I try (she must come from a household where they mistreated her?) I am still looking around at what the probalem migh have been. I know that Cadman was a mixed breed he was half english budgy. Are mixed breed more likely to have problems?

I'm so sorry to haer of your loss :( to answer your question, yes english budgies in general have a much shorter life expectancy that regular budgies, and to mix the two breeds to gether definatley would cause complications :( poor thing

how do you figuire?

i could be wrong, but i was told that mixing two different breeds of an animal (not colourations, but actual breeds) can cause less healthy offspring if it even works at all. i read this about finches spesifically but i would imagine it would be the same for budgies... and also since english budgies don't usually live very long I would assume that mixing the already stuted breed into the long living breed would at least cause the babies to have shorter life spans.

Bea

Not necessarily, english budgies can in fact live as long as regular pet budgies. It's the ridiculously over bred show ones that have the shorter life spans and that's due to "line breeding" (inbreeding) to get the best traits.

really? that makes sence i guess :) good to know! I've always liked english budgies but was told they only life about 5 years or so. I'm glad thats not true :) Do you have any english budgies?

Bea

No but i believe i have a couple with a bit of show blood, they're a fair bit larger than the others. :) Here's a part english budgie i used to have (the big yellow one):

And here is Gherkin compared to Gerri (albino), you can see he's MUCH bulkier!

Imbreeding or cross breeding imbred animals causes weaker immune systems (more suseptable (...spelling..) to illnesses..) and shorter life spans..^-^; just a proven fact.. *hides*

so if the budgie looks like a regular budgie but slightly larger than the others then maybe there is some enlish in her ancestors? or can regular budgies just be slightly bigger and it not be that at all? cause trisket looked normal untill I started putting other budgies in with her and she makes them look tiny by comparison. She even has bigger poops! haha :p

heres a pic :D what do you guys think?

Amy
04-24-2006, 03:53 PM
Lol, if she has bigger poops she might be about to lay!

Crystal_Dawn
04-24-2006, 06:29 PM
i never new that was a sign? weird lol :)

but i don't think thats it, they're not bigger than usual, just bigger than the other budgies. cause she is bigger i think ... the bigger the body, the bigger the poop ;) makes sence i think lol...

Bea

REgular budgies can just be larger. :)

Crystal_Dawn

cool :) is that what you think is the case with trisket then? how can you tell the difference?

Bea

You can't really unless you know his family line. It's just guessing really.

Amy
04-25-2006, 02:48 PM
Oh, and how do you trace a budgies family? Ask it who it's great great grandma is?:p

Hello again everyone.
I just wanted to tell you all that my sister (the owner of cadman's mom and dad) has told me that Cadman was the last one alive in his family. His dad and his brother died. His dad was the one that was english. She told me that they also died suddenly as they didn't show any signs of illness untill the day before they died. So i guess my advice would be to stay away from english budgerigars. Also, is good to see that a lot of you love your budgies as much as I loved mines, my friends think is dumb that I miss a $15, but I could've easily given much much more to keep him alive.

 theres nothing wrong with english budgies, they have the same life span as any other budgie. ! only inter-breeding causes problems.

there is a condition called APOPLEXY where a budgie appears to be well ,then suddenly struggles a little & dies. this can be caused by a dietry deficiency, mainly lack of vitamin E. Maybe it could have been this ?

Amy
04-25-2006, 04:40 PM
A possibility.

Oh well I used to give cadman carrots as a treat, it was the only thing he would eat outside his usual seed diet, I also got him some food that had multi-vitamins. Anyways can you please name some food that have vitamin E?

Can you give your birds regular Wheat Germ? I got some there, I think Pixie will enjoy that.

A couple of thoughts.... English Budgies , in my experience, live just as long as American Budgies. ANY bird can have non-visible problems. As I've mentioned before, I had a very expensive male English Budgie have a heart attack and drop dead off his perch right in front of my eyes.

Crossing English and American birds.... This crossing DOES NOT weaken the offspring. Many breeders will take a beautiful American bird and breed it to a big English bird in order to get the good color with a larger size bird. The resulting offspring will normally be a little larger than the American parent. These babies can then be bred with large English birds and the resulting babies will be bigger again. By doing this over several breeding seasons, you can "enlarge" the color you want to the English or near-English size. I do it all the time. And, the babies are no different, health-wise, than either their English or American parents.

Wheat germ..... Yes, Budgies will eat it. Readily. When I have babies, I will take hard boiled egg, wheat germ, and a little peanut oil, or Linotone (to hold the mixture together) and feed that mixture to the parents. They devour it.

For added nutrition, DURING COOL/COLD weather only, I will take seed, put it into a jar, add some Linotone. Then, I roll/turn the jar to make sure all the seed is coated with the oil (Linotone) . Next, I add some VIONATE to the jar and, again, rotate the jar to make sure the seed gets evenly coated with the VIONATE. The combination of LINOTONE and VIONATE gives the birds a lot more nutrition than just a regular diet of seed. I don't recommend doing this during the Summer or warmer months as because the LINOTONE might spoil if it gets and stays warm for too long.

Just a suggestion that works for me..................
Again, these observations/suggestions are simply based on my own personal experience based on many years of breeding. Not everyone, obviously, does everything exactly alike.

Good luck.
