I've already kind of posted earlier today about my progress with Phin but wanted to start a journal.
I brought Phineas home on 5/17/10. He sat on his comfy perch like a statue all day! I let him get settled while I went about my day. In the evening I decided to play some parakeet sounds for him and he opened up a little bit by moving around and chirping a bit himself!
5/18/10: I greeted Phin in the morning after taking the cover off his cage and offered him some fresh seeds, water and fruit. He went into statue mode again but after awhile, he checked out the fruit dish. All I had was cantalope and he wasn't fond of that! I sat by his cage and he was calm enough in the afternoon that I slowly put my hand inside for about 10 minutes. He didn't mind. I also decided to open the door and see what he would do. He jumped right out and tried to fly at first but ended up sitting on top of his cage and went back inside by himself after about an hour. So I closed the door and after awhile again tried the hand in cage approach.
5/19/10: Once again greeted Phin and changed out the water and seeds. Offered some fresh veggies but today he wasn't interested in that. I sat by his cage and did a 10 minute hand in cage session. This afternoon I opened the cage door and he was content with sitting outside the cage and napping. I put some millet on top of the cage and had my hand next to him and slowly moved closer. He let me gently touch his belly and I was shocked. After returning to the inside of his cage, I closed the door and tried the hand session again after about an hour. He was a little more scared this time so I cut it short and will try again tomorrow!
Tomorrow I want to try my hand again with some millet and see how he does. He seems like a very calm bird anyways so I'm hoping it doesn't take long to gain his trust. I had cokatiels and a sun conure and budgies are definitely a new experience in the training area!
