For the time being we'll be using my other site's IRC channel (Talk Camp). No one currently uses it so it'll just be for this site.

If you already have an IRC client, you can locate us on channel #talkbudgies on server irc.vbulletin-fans.com port 6667.

If you don't have an IRC client, you can download TurboIRC (http://download.com.com/3000-2150-10294137.html?part=84060 &subj=dlpage&tag=button) for free.

If you already have an IRC client, you can skip the next steps. If you downloaded TurboIRC, here's how you can connect to our channel:

After the program is installed, click the Connect button located at the top left corner of the screen.
If this is your first time using the program, a dialog will pop up that has a button which allows you to skip it. If you don't feel like filling it out you may skip it.
The next dialog you may not skip. This is where you will connect to the channel. Ignore the stuff in the left-hand column. In the right-hand column, next to Group Name you can just put vBFans. For the Address field, put irc.vbulletin-fans.com. Leave the Port field alone. For the Nick field, enter your forum username (just so we know who you are). Obviously enter your e-mail address for the E-Mail field. You can also put your name in the Name field.
Hit the Connect button, which is located at the bottom left of the dialog box.
Wait for it to connect; this might take a few moments.
After it connects, another dialog box will pop up, type #talkbudgies into the blank field and click the Join this channel button.
This next step is optional, but if you want to keep your username and ensure no one else uses it, then you should really do this. Type /msg nickserv REGISTER pass email into the box, replacing pass with a password and email with your e-mail address. When you did this hit enter. (Don't worry, no one else can see this. It will not show up in the chat room.) It may show errors telling you to choose a more obscure password, but if you see a message saying "Nickname your nickname registered under your account:..." then it worked anyway. That's all there is to it. There are some symbols you'll need to understand. These will appear in front of usernames:

! - administrator
@ - super moderator
% - junior staff and VIP members
+ - Talk Budgies member
(no symbol) - guest, or you're a member but we haven't added you as a member yet.If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I hope that everyone takes advantage of this channel!

Yeah, that's the problem at my other site. Either no one uses it, or only one person's on at a time. But I think you guys are more willing to use it than them... (Keep that on the down low. ;) )

Amy

Yes, but it said I was called Billy, when I called myself Billy and Lily, like you said. Can I call myself B&L? Then it will all fit in.

Dave

Sure, B&L is fine (or maybe billyandlily with no spaces). I know it's you. I'm there right now so if you enter the channel I'll give you a +.

Dave I know this is a basic question but what is IRC? Is it some kind of chat room thing?

Dave

Yes, it's a type of IRC. To tell you the truth, I haven't visited it in months. I actually forgot about it. :p

I downloaded the IRC program and I got into the chat room...It lloks like a basic set up and is nice.

If anyone is out there right now wanting to chat join me in the chatroom!

We need to maybe start a fresh thread with the info on how to get into the chatroom and then post some set time to chat and then sticky the thread like this one is...

I just tried the IRC channel and no one's there. I guess it's not being used much? Scheduling chat times and posting the schedule is a good idea. It would help get people there at the same time instead of hoping for random meetings. From what I've seen here so far though, there are often enough people around that you can get pretty fast replies to posts. Maybe that's why IRC isn't used much? Just a thought.

The IRC was originally intended just for chit chat, not really budgie-related stuff. It isn't really used much though. I never really log in. I originally set it up as a chat room for us, but I guess this isn't really the "chat room" type of crowd, which is just as good.
